Star Wars needs some sort of revival.

Lucas had his fist tightly in the series, but later he messed it up with the new preequals.

And Joss Wheldon said something where he ruined a great moment in cinematic history, by the original trilogy taking away from the Luke I'm your father moment. But alot of star wars fans really did want to see Anakin become Vader.

Which is legit but Lucas didn't really hit his stride until the 3rd in the new trilogy.

But for the new ones, Lucas didn't capture the essence and feeling that the Original Trilogy did. Which is weird because he primarily made it up. He did have gifted writers helping him out also.

Another problem with the novels / new trilogy is I feel they stray too far from the originals also.

The Force was down graded from a spiritual mystical aspect to a biological component, oh more midichlorians = more pwnage, and borrowing from the Bible . . .

Lucas' new trilogy didn't have the character interactions that the original trilogy did.

Despite Lucas having an iron fist, the Star Wars extended universe had alot of releases that were jokes.

Some novels had a blob enemy as the main bad guy, others had a biological alien creatures unable to use the force but were evil and conquering and hated droids (like GI Joe's biological enemies).

Some gems were there like the Thrawn Trilogy that really captured the essence of Star Wars that the Original Trilogy did. Or the video games, of PC knights of the Old Republic, and also the Force Unleashed story line (not the second one though).

The clone wars animation are pretty good, but imho they are more action oriented, and doesn't have the depth . . .

But in the end it comes down to this:

If Disney does to Star Wars what it did with Pixar and Marvel, then Star Wars is in for a revival. If Disney can let people direct (and also use Lucas' input) and make Star Wars that is similar to the original movies, its good. If they capture what made star wars, star wars (set it apart from Battle Star Galactic and Star Trek & other space operas . . .)

If Disney does what it did to its own animation and development studios, its own animation movies, and what it did to John Carter Mars series . . . ouch . . . Star Wars will finally die as it's been suffering from mediocrity for a long time.

And we wont know until that first movie is made . ..
