Hi Hedge,

I upgraded from an 8800GTX to an HD 4870 recently. In IL2 the only problem I have is the one Nero showed. It is fixable by turning texture compression to none but at the cost of some pauses as textures load after the map has finished loading. Overall the experience in IL2 is extremelly fluid and none of the higher GPUs from the past two years have FPS problems in IL2. I have reported this issue to ATI/AMD but don't expect anything done about it (after all it isn't the latest POS FPS).

In other games/sims the HD 4870 totally outperforms the 8800GTX. Armed Assault has more details enabled and is smoother/faster to boot. FSX allows for higher settings on the water for no FPS hit. In short I can enable more AA/AF with more details set in games for better FPS.

All in all the 4870 is a great card and that means better choice for us gamers/simmers. While the GT260 and GT280 are also great cards I would never recommend them because of what Nvidia did. The fact that NVidia where happy to massivley overprice theses cards because they assumed ATI/AMD were not going to be in the running tells how much they appreciate us (ie fleece the fools). Here in the UK the GT280 was released for £480 including delivery, that is pure and simple daylight robbery! They would still be that price if Nvidia still had the monopoly on high performance GPUs.
