Have to say this is a bloody good fun game, either charging around with armour and a bastard sword or on top of battlements with a bow/crossbow in hand.
So what do you suggest and why

As I understand, War of the roses is limited to the combat?
Have you tested Mount&Blade Warband? If you're into medieval carnage, it is also a great game to play

.. .. M&B is, combat included, the whole deal with roaming a huge imaginary land of Calradia (divided into six factions) with towns, castles and cities. Towns can be looted, castles and cities conquered. You can start your own kingdom work as a vassal for one of factions, or try to help an usurper to the take a throne. It's a great sandbox where you can do pretty much what you want. There is no magic and there's an overall touch of realism to the game.
The game also simulates the intricate feudal hierarchy and relationships of the lords who rule the towns/castles/cities. Personal feuds can spark wars between the factions. Lords can defect. Ladies can elope into marriage with a lord in another faction (this if anything will spark a war

). Etc.
I highly recommend.
EDIT:
I have now played the game ~90 hours, and I have gathered enough troops/companions/experience to try and start my own kingdom, so I renounced my vassalage with the kingdom of Nords, and then laid siege and successfully conquered a castle from the currently weakened kingdom of Swadia. So I feel, that now, after about 90 hours play, the game is just beginning

... This is exactly what I like in a game, but might be daunting for someone else.
