Yep... this is a terrible issue. I have to run in native resolution (1600x900) as, otherwise, I just can't read the dials. (Interestingly, I have also noticed that, since the installation of the Alpha patch, I get no real benefit performance wise from lower resolutions and, on some occasions, my performance is actually worse the lower my video settings are!) I spend most of my time relying on my squad mates to do the spotting.
I've never tried RoF, so I can't speak with any real authority, but I would think that this plane marker idea could be a break from realism, in an aesthetic sense, but an increase in realism in another way as I'm assuming the real life pilot would see a contact a lot quicker than I manage to so it is a trade off.
