Sorry no experience on British fighters, but I have done this in He111 now couple of times.

Method 1 (most likely not usable for you):
I trim the plane to fly somewhat level, check the magnetic compass, turn the gyro to that heading, check the mag.comp again and revise the gyro.

Method 2 (much easier and usable):
Just ignore the gyro heading, set the course setter to match your current gyro heading and use it like that. Use the course setter to steer to the magnetic heading you want.
