Happen when a pike unit march that, if attacked, they lost the formation. The frontal men no directly in contact with the enemy still advance or make a flank movement; in any case the lost the form of a square formation. I think this is more logic for the swordmen, but a pike unit must try, if possible, to mantain a square formation.
