Indicated airspeed is more useful than you might think as well. Say a given plane stalls at 120 kph at sea level, it will stall at roughly the same indicated speed (giving a bit of leeway for variables) at nearly any altitude. The same thinner air that is giving you a lower than actual reading on your speed indicator is also giving you that much less lift! Pretty cool eh?

BTW it's refreshing to see someone who really wants to learn, if you stick with the hobby you'll be learning a lot for a long time. I've been doing this for over 12 years and I'm still learning.
