The cool factor is way beyond infantry combat and is more akin to a sport. Plus there is alot less blood and you dont have to watch simulated people dying all the time. Unless your a chute shooter, which isnt fair anyways.

That is easy to explain:
a) you dumb the sim down that everybody has fun -> it is getting boring pretty fast.
b) you do a real sim -> a steep learning curve frightens the majority
c) to have fun you have to invest in hardware, only to get laughed about by your spouse when you use it (TIR).
