I always do the following istalling new drivers and it seems to work well for me.

1. Uninstall the old driver via Control Panel/Uninstall Program.
2.Restart PC in safe mode without internet connection.
3.Run a driver cleaner-I use driversweeper and clear out old Nvidia display drivers.
4.Re-start normally (but without internet connection) and run the driver install.
5. Restart with Internet connection and re-do settings etc.

This has always worked for me. As to the Nvidia update thing I don't use it. Nvidia bundles up a load of useless rubbish with their drivers and this is another example. If you want to update your drivers better to do it yourself.
