Windows automatically turns off Aero mode if it gets low on memory.
However, i wouldn't just disable it altogether because a couple of things in the sim rely on displaying a windows pop-up window ( saving a track and using the "save as..." function in the controls setup screen) and that needs Aero to be on.
However, if you have already saved a copy of your controls and you don't use the track recorder feature, you can go ahead and safely disable it.
It was the same with the aircraft selection menu in multiplayer but they recently changed it in a patch and now it uses only in-game menus, so i suppose that these two functions will also get a similar treatment in a subsequent patch and we won't need to keep Aero on anymore.
