For a long time I couldn't fly anything but the Allies, mostly western (USA/GB). I felt I couldn't play an emulation of the armed forces of the countries that did all those horrible things. These days I still have a very healthy preference for western allies, then IJN then other Axis, but will fly any side for online balance.
Although I've been reading about Japan's participation and absolutely appalling ethical conduct during WWII, I am really interested in carrier warfare, so that's why the IJN preference over other Axis powers.

If appalling ethical conduct in WWII would be a factor in choosing the faction, we would all fly bf 109E with swiss markings. But maybe you are not talking about the armys, but about the government?
I choose the axis because I am German and Swiss
and beacause I prefere to have speed instead of tight turn capability. I also like the 20mm. When it comes to the Pacific, I choose F4 over zero any day
