If you play with a modded version, graphics load online can be a little too heavy for older systems. I used to activate a special MOD to decrease the graphics quality when online, so that i didn't get stutter or FPS loss , at the cost of a little graphic detail.
Now, if you play with the stock version, then you should have no problems at all online.
