We don't use trimmers, only rudders, elevators, ailerons and throttle. And flying without dead-bands in order to control the position in formation more precise.

PS: Also I can say that if you began to try to fly in formation at Yak-3 it will be very hard for you. Try to begin with Mustang. Yak was rather uncomfortable even for us.
