Default MoTMod NPCs Guide

Here's a list of NPCs encountered in Death to Spies: Moment of Truth.

Note that the screenshots come from forlik's MoTMod 1.11, not the unmodded Moment of Truth.

Wiking Division Soldier

Actor Name: GermanSoldier
Body Texture Name: ngerman_soldier01.dds
Head Texture Name: ngerman_head01.dds
Weapons: Walther P38, Kar 98k, MP40, StG44, Stielhandgranate
Found in: All German missions except Winter Cold
Affiliations: 5th SS Panzer Division "Wiking"
Description: The 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking was one of the elite Panzer divisions of the thirty eight Waffen SS divisions. It was recruited from foreign volunteers, from Scandinavia, Finland, Estonia, The Netherlands, and Belgium under the command of German officers. During the course of World War II, the division progressed from a motorised infantry division to a Panzer division and served on the Eastern Front during World War II. It surrendered in May 1945 to the advancing American forces in Austria. Josef Mengele served in this division before being assigned to Auschwitz.

In both DtS games, they wear an armband to signify they are from the Wiking Division. However, their belt buckle is a Wehrmacht one. Another oddity is that although they have the rank of Private, their NormalMap texture shows their rank as Corporal.

Trivia: In DtS, the Wiking Division soldier was just a simple soldier skin. However, in MoT, the role of this uniform varies depending on the mission. Oddly, like other Waffen SS soldiers, they are not allowed into more highly-secure areas despite being a military arm of the SS.

Waffen SS Soldier

Actor Name: GermanSoldier, GermanSoldierCam
Body Texture Name: ngerman_soldier03.dds, ngerman_soldier06.dds, german_soldiercam_body.dds
Head Texture Name: ngerman_head03.dds, ngerman_head06.dds, soldiercam_head.dds, soldiercam_head2.dds, soldiercam_head3.dds
Weapons: Walther P38, Kar 98k, MP40, StG44, Gewehr 43, Stielhandgranate
Found in: All German missions except Winter Cold, King's Riddle and Polish Surprise
Affiliations: Waffen SS
Description: The Waffen-SS (Armed SS) was the paramilitary arm of the Schutzstaffel ("Protective Squadron") or SS, an organ of the Nazi Party. The Waffen-SS saw action throughout World War II and grew from three regiments to over 38 divisions, and served alongside the Wehrmacht Heer regular army, but was never formally part of it. It was Adolf Hitler's will that the Waffen-SS never be integrated into the army, it was to remain the armed wing of the Party and to become an elite police force once the war was won. Operational control of units on the front line was given to the Army's High Command, but in all other respects it remained under the control of Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler's SS organization, through the SS Führungshauptamt (SS operational command office).

At first membership was open to "Aryans" only in accordance with the racial policies of the Nazi state, but in 1940 Hitler authorized the formation of units composed largely or solely of foreign volunteers and conscripts, and by the end of the war ethnic non-Germans made up approximately 60% of the Waffen-SS.

After the war at the Nuremberg Trials, the Waffen-SS was condemned as a criminal organization due to its essential connection to the Nazi Party and its involvement in war crimes. Waffen-SS veterans were denied many of the rights afforded to veterans who had served in the Heer (army), Luftwaffe (air force) or Kriegsmarine (navy). The exception made was for Waffen-SS conscripts sworn in after 1943, who were exempted due to their involuntary servitude. In the 1950s and 1960s, Waffen-SS veteran groups successfully fought numerous legal battles in West Germany to overturn the Nuremberg ruling and win pension rights for their members.

In both DtS games, they wear camouflage. However, their belt buckle and sleeve eagle (in the case of the green camouflage soldier) are incorrect. Another oddity is that both the orange and green camouflage soldier's NormalMap texture shows the SS symbol on both sides of the collar, which is also incorrect.

Trivia: In DtS, the Waffen SS soldier was just a simple soldier skin. The brown-green camouflage soldier is a different actor, but was otherwise just another soldier. However, in MoT, the role of this uniform varies depending on the mission. Oddly, they are not allowed into more highly-secure areas despite being a military arm of the SS.

Wehrmacht Soldier

Actor Name: GermanSoldier
Body Texture Name: ngerman_soldier05.dds
Head Texture Name: ngerman_head05.dds
Weapons: Walther P38, Kar 98k, MP40, StG44, Stielhandgranate
Found in: All German missions except Winter Cold, King's Riddle and Polish Surprise
Affiliations: Wehrmacht
Description: The Heer was the Army land forces component of the German armed forces (Wehrmacht) from 1935 to 1945, the latter also included the Navy (Kriegsmarine) and the Air Force (Luftwaffe). During the Second World War, a total of about 15 million soldiers served in the German Army, of whom about seven million perished.

In both DtS games, you can tell these guys are Wehrmacht by their collar insignia and breast eagle. All Wehrmacht soldiers have the rank of Corporal.

Trivia: In DtS, the Wehrmacht soldier was just a simple soldier skin. However, in MoT, the role of this uniform varies depending on the mission. Version 1.10 of MoTMod features new, real Heer uniforms.

Waffen SS Driver

Actor Name: GermanSoldier
Body Texture Name: ngerman_soldier04.dds
Head Texture Name: ngerman_head04.dds
Weapons: Walther P38, Luger P08, Kar 98k, MP40, Stielhandgranate
Found in: All German missions except Winter Cold and Polish Surprise
Affiliations: Waffen SS
Description: Drivers are responsible for delivering munitions, supplies or extra troops, as well as serving as personal chauffeurs for certain officers.

In both DtS games, they can be identified by their green collar. However, their breast eagle is incorrect.

Trivia: In DtS, with the exception of Cannibal, the driver was just a simple soldier skin. However, in MoT, the role of this uniform varies depending on the mission.

SS Soldier

Actor Name: GermanSoldier
Body Texture Name: ngerman_soldier02.dds
Head Texture Name: ngerman_head02.dds
Weapons: Walther P38, Kar 98k, MP40, StG44, Stielhandgranate
Found in: All German missions except Winter Cold
Affiliations: SS
Description: The Schutzstaffel (Protection Squadron), abbreviated SS, was a major Nazi organization under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. The SS grew from a small paramilitary unit to a powerful force that served as the Führer's "Praetorian Guard," the Nazi Party's "Shield Squadron" and a force that, fielding almost a million men (both on the front lines and as political police), managed to exert as much political influence in the Third Reich as the Wehrmacht, Germany's regular armed forces. Built upon the Nazi ideology, the SS, under Heinrich Himmler's command, was responsible for many of the crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Nazis during World War II, and most of the particularly egregious ones.

Initially numerically smaller than Ernst Röhm's Sturmabteilung ("Storm Detachment," abbreviated SA), the SS grew in size and power due to its exclusive loyalty to Hitler, as opposed to the SA, which was seen as semi-independent and a threat to Hitler's hegemony over the party. Under Himmler, the SS selected its members according to the Nazi ideology. Creating elite police and military units such as the Waffen-SS, Hitler used the SS to form an order of men claimed to be superior in racial purity and ability to other Germans and national groups, a model for the Nazi vision of a master race. During World War II, SS units operated alongside the regular German Army; and in the final stages of the war, the SS came to dominate the Wehrmacht in order to eliminate perceived threats to Hitler's power while implementing his strategies, despite the increasingly futile German war effort.

According to the Nuremberg Trials, as well as countless war crimes investigations and trials conducted over the past sixty years, the SS was responsible for the vast majority of war crimes perpetrated under the Nazi regime; in particular, it was the primary organization which carried out the Holocaust. As part of its race-centric functions, the SS oversaw the isolation and displacement of Jews from the populations of the conquered territories, seizing their assets and transporting them to concentration camps and ghettos where they would be used as slave labor (pending extermination) or immediately killed.

Chosen to implement the Nazi "Final Solution" for the Jews and other groups deemed inferior (and/or enemies of the state), the SS carried out the killing, torture and enslavement of approximately twelve million people. Most victims were Jews or of Polish or other Slavic extraction, but other racial/ethnic groups such as the Romani made up a significant number of victims. Furthermore, the SS purge was extended to those viewed as threats to "race hygiene" or Nazi ideology—including the mentally or physically handicapped, homosexuals, or political dissidents. Members of labor organizations and those perceived to be affiliated with groups (religious, political, social and otherwise) that opposed the regime, or were seen to have views contradictory to the goals of the Nazi government, were rounded up in large numbers; these included clergy of all faiths, Jehovah's Witnesses, Freemasons, Communists, and Rotary Club members.

Foreseeing Nazi defeat in the war, a significant number of SS personnel organized their escape to South American nations. These escapes are said to have been assisted by an organization known as ODESSA, an acronym of the German phrase Organisation der ehemaligen SS-Angehörigen, which translates as the Organization of Former Members of the SS. Many others were captured and prosecuted by Allied authorities at the Nuremberg Trials for war crimes, and absconding SS criminals were the targets of police forces in various Allied nations, post-war West and East Germany, Austria and Israel.

Trivia: In DtS, the SS soldier was just a simple soldier skin. However, in MoT, the role of this uniform varies depending on the mission. They are allowed access to some of the more highly-secure areas (this is actually because they are of a much higher rank than other soldiers - all SS soldiers have the rank of Staff Sergeant). In localized versions of DtS, like other Nazi paraphernalia, their swastika armbands are censored. Although SS soldiers are notorious for their black uniforms, the SS actually stopped wearing black in 1939. Another error with the SS uniform is the Wehrmacht belt buckle and incorrect sleeve insignia (Staff Sergeant is not supposed to have any).

SS Helferin

Actor Name: GermanFrau
Body Texture Name: frau_body.dds
Head Texture Name: frau_head.dds, frau2_head.dds
Weapons: Walther P38 (some are unarmed)
Found in: All German missions except Winter Cold and White Head
Affiliations: SS
Description: SS helferinnen, or female helpers, are auxilaries in the SS. They serve as cleaners, radio operators, or secretaries for certain officers.
Trivia: They are the only armed women in the DtS games, though this is infrequent in MoT. Like all female characters, you cannot use their clothes. There is an unused second head texture in MoT's files, "frau2_head.dds".

Wehrmacht Officer

Actor Name: GermanOfficer
Body Texture Name: ngerman_officer03.dds
Head Texture Name: ngerman_officerhead03.dds, ngerman_officerhead04.dds
Weapons: Walther P38, Luger P08, Stielhandgranate
Found in: All German missions except Winter Cold
Affiliations: Wehrmacht
Description: Wehrmacht officers are responsible for giving orders to soldiers, maintaining discipline and leading their men into battle. They are allowed into more highly-secure areas, and are entrusted with the care of important items, like documents and keys.

In both DtS games, you will know they're Wehrmacht officers by their collar insignia. All officers have the rank of Major. However, their caps have a band on them, which was actually worn by junior officers (officers from the rank of 2nd Lieutenant up wear cords on their caps).

Trivia: The Wehrmacht officer is just a simple officer skin, and usually has no effect on gameplay. The one exception is in the DtS mission "Die Spies!", where an optional objective requires you to take the uniform of Colonel Jürgen Resch (Wehrmacht officer in a black cap) and summon Adolf Steinglitz (one of the targets) to his office. Version 1.10 of MoTMod features new, real Heer uniforms.

Waffen SS Officer

Actor Name: GermanOfficer
Body Texture Name: ngerman_officer02.dds
Head Texture Name: ngerman_officerhead02.dds
Weapons: Walther P38, Luger P08, Stielhandgranate
Found in: All German missions except Winter Cold
Affiliations: Waffen SS
Description: Waffen SS officers are responsible for giving orders to soldiers, maintaining discipline and leading their men into battle. They are allowed into more highly-secure areas, and are entrusted with the care of important items, like documents and keys. All officers have the rank of SS-Sturmbannführer (Major). However, their belt buckle and sleeve eagle are incorrect. The collar also has a white border around the edges, and their caps have a band on them, both of which were actually worn by junior officers (officers from the rank of SS-Untersturmführer (2nd Lieutenant) up wear cords on their caps).
Trivia: The Waffen SS officer is just a simple officer skin, and has no effect on gameplay.

SD Officer

Actor Name: GermanOfficer
Body Texture Name: ngerman_officer01.dds
Head Texture Name: ngerman_officerhead01.dds, ngerman_officerhead05.dds
Weapons: Walther P38, Luger P08, Stielhandgranate
Found in: All German missions except Winter Cold
Affiliations: Gestapo, SD
Description: SD officers are responsible for giving orders to soldiers, maintaining discipline and leading their men into battle. They are allowed into more highly-secure areas, and are entrusted with the care of important items, like documents and keys. All officers have the rank of SS-Sturmbannführer (Major).

In both DtS games, you will know they're SD officers by the insignia on their sleeve. Other than this, it is an SS officer's uniform, but their belt buckle is a Wehrmacht one. The collar also has a white border around the edges, and their caps have a band on them, both of which were actually worn by junior officers (officers from the rank of SS-Untersturmführer (2nd Lieutenant) up wear cords on their caps). Another oddity is that although they don't have any words on their cuff bands, their NormalMap texture shows the word "Wiking" on the cuff band.

Trivia: The SD officer is just a simple officer skin, and has no effect on gameplay. In localized versions of DtS, like other Nazi paraphernalia, their swastika armbands are censored.

Dietrich Meltzer

Actor Name: Yazik
Body Texture Name: yazik_body.dds
Head Texture Name: yazik_head.dds
Weapons: Luger P08
Found in: Cannibal
Affiliations: SS
Description: Sturmbannführer (Major) Dietrich Meltzer is the commanding officer of an unspecified German tank base currently producing the latest Ferdinand (which is later to become Elefant) SPGs. Because of his knowledge of Ferdinand, Strogov is tasked by SMERSH to abduct him and steal Ferdinand-related documents from his safe.
Trivia: In reality, at the time Cannibal is set, Ferdinand couldn't have been a secret from Soviet intelligence because it was used in the Battle of Kursk (1943). Meltzer has a unique animation, and as of MoTMod 1.02, still has his DtS skeleton. In localized versions of DtS, like other Nazi paraphernalia, his swastika armband is censored. Version 1.10 of MoTMod features a revamped version of Cannibal. Notable changes include setting the location of the tank base to Goslar, the changing of Ferdinand to Jagdpanther, and the changing of Meltzer from a unique SS officer with a DtS skeleton to a unique Wehrmacht Panzer general with an MoT skeleton. Strogov cannot use his uniform!
