I am building a new system after my one short-circuited itself. The new video card is a Sapphire HD 5770. The Catalyst installer that came on the disk (v 9.11), completely freezes my system, as does the newer version downloaded from ATI (v 10.3) .....
All I can do is let Windows XP pull the basic display drivers off the disk, which normally would be fine but I need Catalyst to do this work around for IL-2 (I think).

Well, I think I have discovered what my problem was.
Originally, I thought the problem was with the ATI HD 5770 card, so I went out and got a nVidia GTS 250 as a substitute. (I tried a GTX 260, but that card wouldn't physically fit in my case - too long by about 15 mm - the framing around the HDD enclosures got in the way).
Alas, when I tried to install the nVidia drivers, I found that the system froze up as well. That left me with the very depressing feeling that my problem was with the motherboard, rather than with either the video card or video drivers.......
Out of desperation, I plugged the GTS 250 into the second 16x PCI-e slot on the motherboard - and lo and behold, the drivers loaded up! So far so good - and although I haven't yet tried it, I think that the HD 5770 will work in the second slot as well.....
I could go and get a return on the motherboard, but at this stage my frame of mind is just to let it be as I have spent too much time and nervous effort on the problem, I don't want to do the whole rigmarole of building the system up from the motherboard, and I will never try & run an SLI or Crossfire setup, so I only need one PCI-e slot anyway.......
So. now I am left with 2 decent video cards.....
Should I just stick with a nice & comfy nVidia card that I know will work flawlessly, or should I swap in the HD 5770 and try the work-around for a bit more performance? Or should I just leave the HD 5770 in the cupboard, for when SoW comes out (
