Further to my earlier post, there is a very useful pdf file with pictures of all medals issued by the UK. Not all will be relevant, but this is an official MOD document which you can download here.

I am also waiting on confirmation from the Joint Personnel Administration Centre at the MOD for the exact medal position in 1940 for RAF personnel.
