You have to destroy the yellow targets. The red targets mean nothing. When you get to Stalingrad, the Spanish pilot greets you and then the tanks appear, and they move around on the map a bit.
I guess you're using simulation mode, which is good because without it you'd probably just know by memory where the tanks are from arcade or realistic. Instead you get the chance to actually have to fly past the target, ID it, and keep your eye on it as you climb, turn and make an attack run.
Problem is, the tanks are damn hard to find aren't they. Well they should be, they're smack in the middle of a ruined city and they have plenty of places to hide. If there's a row of trees or a building with half a roof they'll drive under it, and you can hear them fire but can't see them. Well don't give up, they're not ALL hiding. This may spoil the challenge, but there are 2 or 3 tanks in the open right on the northeast end of the cluster. One of them is at an intersection at the west end of a patch of mostly wooded land between the streets and the Volga. Look for an AA gun on that patch of land (knock it out if it's hostile, I can't remember) and the easiest tank is almost due west of it. Fly low and to the side of that northeast section of streets, look out the window to the side while dipping your wings. Once you spot the tank, use the road it's on like a runway: extend away parallel to the road, keep it in sight, then turn and head back at about a 30 degree attack angle. Use a bomb to kill the tank. You only actually have to get one tank.
After that some fw190's may appear and almost kill you, there's no avoiding it. They tell you to lose them before you go back to base, but you can't lose them. Just fly low and go back to base.
