I agree what you say about the battlefields being a bleaky, bloody mess. It was a world war but the whole world wasn't a battlefield and pilots were lucky enough to fly away from the bleak bloody mess over very beautifull grassy fields.

I'm sure airfields weren't always a muddy bog, if they were, aircraft would have been grounded, especially the 109 alot more than they actually were.
