As much as I hate to say this.. But, play a few "Arcade" so you can see where the leading target site is.. It isn't there with Realistic or Sim (and it shouldn't be), but Arcade it is, and it will give you an idea as to where you need to aim. If you aim at an airplane, of course, by the time your bullet gets there, the plane will be gone so you will miss it. In single player, set yourself up a few matches in "training".. Do it in arcade to see where you need to aim.. then go to realistic and apply what you learned in arcade.
Another food for thought however, in multi player.. I shouldn't be giving advice in dog fighting, since that is not my strong suit, but, I "get it" even if I myself aren't that good.. BUT, I have gotten more hits, and even a decent amount of kills if I lead my target even more than you are supposed to. If you figure out how much to lead a target in single player, you need to add some in multi player. I found in some cases, it is as much as 50% more lead than in single player. I am assuming this is due to compensate for "lag" on line... But, experiment around with that... It has helped me allot.
