I got lucky
IL-2 1946 worked straight out the box, no tweaking. Maybe I missed out on the issues of IL-2 series pre 1946?
Then again my PC is the last of the 3 ghz single cores and with 2 g of ram runs IL-2 ok.
I'm going to build a powerful dual core, I'll see how that goes.
But you can tell how popular and loved a game is by the modding and community it has.
IL-2 commands a strong group after 8 years. BOB SOW is supposed to eclipse IL-2 series by a lot . . . they have alot to beat . . .
But I think Oleg n crew can pull it off.
You wanna know how good IL-2 is? When it works as a "nicotine patch"
WHen IL-2 enhances your life, and even helps deal with issues people pay thousands to a shrink to half work out and 100 AA type sessions.
I'm a picky gamer. Even games that got near tens' or game of the year (like Knights of the Old Republic) what was good was I could play for 1-3 hours and walk away, 2 months they were uninstalled b/c I got bored or the ran through all the mods.
OR
I played to them like no other, such as a good MMO like Lord of the Rings Online or World of Warcrack (WOW). I was a hardcore MMO addict but they slowly rotted away my real life. I had to give them up.
Only when IL-2 came along, that I was able to close the door on MMO's again.
IL-2, I play it for a few hours and let it go, but unlike other non MMO games after 4 months still I'm playing. I'm even perusing M4T and looking to photoshop for skinning.
Deleted all other games, removed 100 gigs of MMO games and patches and related programs for them. Even some uber mods that few else had and can't find out on public domains and rare on private . . .
I was on the following the next biggest MMO (its the new starwars one). I found out I was on the list to beta test it and the game company had selected me. I deleted it and the beta testing liaison emailed me a week later asking me why I haven't activated my account. He said they have millions of people that would kill to get my slot.
I told them; Well I've always taken, now I'm going to be giving. Tell someone I said Merry Christmas, and have fun. I'm getting out of MMO's and also because the real game worth waiting for that fits me and my lifestye is BOB SOW. He emailed me back, "Don't you know this is the biggest MMO since WOW (WOW commands 5-10 million subscriptions depending who you ask) and will be even more popular. Are you sure?" I replied, "Yep. Good luck with the game and beta testing!"
IL-2 rekindled a childhood love of warbirds and military planes. I couldn't get into the miliary due to asthma, weak eyesight, and other medical issues. So when that door closed I walked away from planes completely. Partly the hurt of losing something I swore I'd be as a kid, and I didn't want to be a poser, love something but you can't do it (fly).
I realize now even if I was healthier and did become a fighter pilot, I wouldn't be where I am now, and right now my life is going really great and I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything else.
IL-2 has helped bring closure to a chapter in my life I had long ignored, and now there is a game I can enjoy for years, but be willing to walk away from to enjoy and take part in other aspects and responsibilities in my life.
