Demo: Less than impressed

To it's credit, I was very happy with the padlock controls. Graphics are good, I liked the damage, the cockpit detail, all good stuff. The planes sound great.

On the negative side: Nearly unplayable on any difficuly beyond arcade. I appreciate the realism of realistic and simulation modes, but with no feedback as to why the plane suddenly enters a spin, it just seems to happen for no reason. It's just too frustrating to be fun. There are too few consessions for not actually being in a plane.

I am looking through a box with a controller in my hand, not actually sitting in a plane where I can just turn my head to look at things and where I have a total tactile connection with the machine I am operating.

Even in arcade mode, the game is very dry and boring. As a simulation, there is little to no educational value for learning to fly.

I was a big fan of sims like Janes WW2 fighters and MS flight simulator, but despte that I went in with great enthusiasm and came out wanting to play battlefield 1943. I don't think playing it on a PC would have made any difference.

If you disagree, that's awesome, no need to flame, this is just my opinion.

Turn down the elevator sensitivity on the Menu and that should fix your spin problem. In real life, you couldn't pull the stick in an airplane all the way back, so try to resist pulling the stick all the way back on your gamepad or get a flight stick. Plus, pulling tight turns kills airspeed(i.e. stall).

As for learning how to fly in BoP, the retail version will feature a training and free flight mode for all of the aircraft.

Now you also have to realize that this was only a demo. It's only a taste of what you can expect from the campaign. Not single player, which is probebly what you are looking forward to.

Out of curiosity, what brought you to making this statement? Is it a lack of something in the game or too much of something?

BTW, nice avatar.

Question. Should you also turn down the sensitivity when playing with a flight stick instead of a controller?

juz1 08-10-2009 09:35 PM

yes- go down half way then work your way up to a level that balances your playing style (generally with a stick 10-12/ 18 seems pref)

its really just like calibrating any controller- e.g.I HAVE to tone down my ms wheel brake pedal or I lock up way too easy...

Cool. So the only adjustment to make, would be on the " elevator sensitivity " ? I have a ps3, i dont know what kind of settings can be adjusted yet.

juz1 08-10-2009 09:49 PM

personally I adjust both aeroloins and elevator sensitivity...I can't say for sure everyone else does...

btw the full game might have tweaked the sensitivity already---other posters might have more on this

Ok. Thanks for the quick reply ! Any other good advice ?
Should i start on realistic, or dive right into simulation ? And what are the diffrences in the 2 levels ? Forget about arcade. I guess i'll chk the forums again, about the sensitivity when the full game comes out then, before i adjust anything.
