The Demise of Hyperlobby
Not enough has been said in appreciation of Jiri's creation of Hyperlobby and the efforts he has put in over the years to provide a free place for us to gather and converse and fly the sims we all enjoy. Many of us are very thankful..but more and more Hyperlobby is being populated with those with zero respect for what Jiri has accomplished.
Sadly now, Hyperlobby is going the same way that the ol' Microsoft Zone has gone. The absense of any moderators on Hyperlobby is obvious. The moderators have simply left and there has been visually zero effort to replace them. The level of troll like behavior is at an all time high. And now , the news of Hyperlobby itself being hacked. http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/t...3/m/2441022267 No one is sure how to contact Jiri now that the Hyperlobby Forums have been deactivated. Many of are unsure of the future of Hyperlobby. There isn't any concrete information on how SOW will be configured and how servers will be handled . If SOW will be hosted on Hyperlobby , no one knows. Meawhile , an historically healthy and active community has been left holding the bag at Hyperlobby fending off these trolls and hackers. - Eries |

Maybe another good point to face the fact, that with all the talented and rightful modders, these hackers are part of our community as well. They read our forums, they even post and then they substract 500kg from the plane-weight and go for a fight. And as in the HL-case, what can we do against it? Probably the same: Put on the rose-colored glasses and say it doesn't happen in large numbers and flame, kick or ban some nicks or IPs. :( |
...Some of them are now working for Oleg.:grin:

There is only one way to protect your websites with all the hackers and crackers, since they are not being prosecuted with any real effort.
Make complete backups of websites frequently. This is a lot of work, especially on large sites... there is nothing else you can do. Human beings are intelligent, resourceful, and often mean spirited. You can't keep'em all out. |
More like MS Zone....? Well its time to move on.
I always said, if you want to fly historically online, you have to go private servers where you get to know the people playing. Hard work yea so is life. |
As I fly on UK time I don't see any problems in the Lobby any where between 15:00 to 23:00 GMT
What times are these hackers and "Zonesque" upstarts around ? |
Hyperlobby has been a great resource for the flight sim community for years and years. At this point though, it's dated, cumbersome and sorely in need of a revision which Jiri will not do (he's said so repeatedly over the last few years and has been invisible for at least the last 12 months).
I stopped using HL about 5 years ago for a couple basic reasons that make HL pale in comparison to other server-finders (like Xfire and the now unsupported AllSeeingEye). For one, it has tight limits on the length of your user name and mine was always 2 or 3 digits too long always requiring some type of wierd abbreviation. Second, is the chat room scrolling across the bottom. It's mostly populated with inconsiderate, potty-mouthed wannabes usually talking about something completely unrelated to flying, flight sims or this community. And lastly, it's become a bit convoluted and can be awkward for new users to get sorted (witness all the threads on myriad servers about "...not being able to get HL working properly". Don't get me wrong though, it's a sad day when this originally great product from Jiri goes the way of the 'zone', but not because of any recent functionality as much as nostalgiac reasons. My .02c Besides, now maybe Galen Thurber will really be forgotten. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...bolt56/der.gif TB |
From Furbals post over at Ubi forums.
"UPDATE: 9 June Jiri advises that all holes should now be filled and these hacks should not now bother us. Thank you, Jiri ! (that's fast !)" Rgr, thanks very much to Jiri ! Now if we could get him to choose again among the trustworthy folks he knows there to create another group of moderators . It would again be nice to see the level of moderator activity we saw for many years early on that made Hyperlobby more of an intellectual experience than an experience of practicing the "ignore" command. But importantly much apreciation to Jiri for taking the time to do some patching.. Salute ! - Eries |

I think that the Hyperlobby is still usable. I haven't stopped using it since Sturmovik first flew there. I use private IP as well, but HL remains the place for casual encounters in open coop missions. Sure, there are some total plonkers using the chat now & again - but I don't have a problem ignoring them. B |
