How does submodem work?

Can someone explain me how to use sub-modem?Its description says "posible to obtain information about next systems" or something similar.
And how to use other programs? I cant find any keys to do that.

You use the T (talk) command. You talk to the enemy ship and then initiate the program you want to use.
