Guardsmen - why so rare?

I am playing a Warrior and am at the stage where I can visit the Elven Island. At the moment, I still cannot find anywhere that offers Guardsmen (The upgrades from Swordsmen) in Hordes, or at least very large numbers.

The chapel right next to King Mark did offer about 250+ of them after I signed the dwarf treaty, but I used those up rather quickly adventuring around the remaining areas of Kordan.

Now I am all used up on Guardsmen. I find it odd that they are so scarce while I can buy the 4th level Horsemen in Hordes (along w/ Archers & Swordsmen).

I noticed the 3rd level Iquisitors are the same way. Super rare while their lower-level cousins (Priests) and even Arch Mages are available in much larger numbers.

Anyway, hopefully I can find more Guardsmen (or a suitable replacement) on the Elven Island. My goal is to replace all my Swordsmen with Guardsmen.

Unit availability is mostly random and generated when you start the game. Sounds like luck of the draw just didn't go the way you wanted it.

You may want to try the spell "sacrifice" to build up more guardsmen from the ones you have.

I don't know...they've been pretty rare in all of my games so far. The only certain source is the chapel, but that dries up quickly, as has been mentioned. Pity that there isn't an infinite number of them at the castle at one point.

I don't think there is any structure in the Elves and Death land selling guardsman. You may wish to consider some other units to replace them.

Furious Paladin is the other vendor that may have lots of guardsman on sale but unlike the chapel, it is random.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I've pretty much come to the realization that I'll always be short on Guardsmen this game. I did try the "sacrifice" spell, but it simply doesn't produce them in the numbers I would like. Perhaps casting it at a higher level would be more beneficial, but I am a warrior and don't want to invest any more points in magic.

Either way, there are plenty of alternatives. I'm even thinking of carrying around 3 "archer" stacks (Hunters, cannonballers, bowmen) to maximize use of that great scope artifact!

Super game, BTW. Probably sleeper of the year.

I just realize that the Guardsman in the chapel will turn into "Horde" after defeating Karador. It has been a while since I defeat Karador. :P
