3d there are many ways to achieve artistically

with the focus:

focus tells our brain depth, i recall a recent black and white platform game which used this effect of different focus in diferent depths

i found it:

the fog effect or shade chromostereopsis:

naturally and specially in ancient times the air was fogged with smoke so the farther the object the darker it appears, so our brain tells depth as well by level of sahde

you can see that how this artist achieves depth by shading darker the farther, you may or you may not percieve that in this image myself i only percieve depth here with glasses on:

another option is apply traditional crhomosteropsis and play with colour taking into account violet is farthest and red closest

really its a shame that robotic mathematical aproach to games, its not a matter of make it right but make it LOOK right

for example rof uses an amplified perspective just like model kit artists by which far away objects are magnified, i miss those litle artistic touchs in clod

Tilt shift seems to be popular at the moment, seen a lot of it used in TV recently. Not strictly 3D but it adds depth.

some examples.
