Steam activation

I just purchased the GOTY from green man gaming about a day or so ago. I tied the key to a gamespy account but I'm not able to activate the key on steam. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do?

Try the "Multi-player" key if you have one.
Steam accepted that key for me although I only play single player.
