2 installs on 1 harddrive

How would I install two separate installation of IL-2 1946 on one hard drive, so if I mess up the secondary installation, it doesn't affect the primary?
If that makes any since.

Put the second install in a separate directory,ie when it asks where you want to install the second installation pick a different place default is C,so put to D, of course this all depends how your harddrive is set up.

I have 2 right next to each other in the same directory. I just renamed one "IL-2 1946 Original"

Yes, and if you use Bearcat's extra shortcut icons - http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=3504 - you won't get confused by which version is which ;)

There is no need to actually install il2 a second time....just copy the entire folder to wherever and make a shortcut to the il2.exe

I just backup my "users" folder, "conf.ini" folder and "skins" folder every week or so to keep my backups current and clear everything else off. I had 2 installs for about a year, but it just became redundant and unnecessary. I have separate folders with different .dll versions so I can switch and that's it.

Yes. As said already, it's very simple. I have 5 for different versions of the sim...for comparison reasons.
