It´s not a rant, its a state of mind + tips :)
Maybe its a question of mentality, maybe im just tired of the impatient of some young hearts in here. I do reckon the game its not what it was promised to, but i also was aware when i bought it that would take years to refine. I had a choice when i picked it from steam: to download and participate in the development or sit back and wait, playing other things. I love flying, i decided to jump in.
Yes like many others i want this simulation to go forward and give us the best game of planes in WW2 we ever had. But till then i try to take out the most from the set we have. So, said that, i decided to share my own findings as many others have in other threads. A statement: im nor "red" or "blue". Ive paid for a game with planes on both sides i intend to fly them all. 109s - Amazing speed and nice climbing at all altitudes - Personnal settings, trim the nose down to position 2, oil rad 25% open, and let it gain speed and cruise climb. The E1 turns better than the E3 or E4 - my guess its because it doesnt have the wing cannons. I find the 109´s at this early stage of the game a very easy plane to fly. Maybe im being unfair to some other "tricks" im unware, but i rarely find myself in danger when on the cockpit of the "yellow nose". Hey i can always dive and run away. Spits - Been flying those a bit more lately for a reason: They have provide me a bigger challenge to fly due to CEM knowledge requirements. They all diffrent. My favorite ride so far its the SPIT I (notice the no "a") for a simple reason. Its the best spit ride of them all at all altitudes. Elaborating a bit more: To get the most of the SPIT I you need to do this: Warm up time - A bit longer than the others but thanks to "Rush" i got a trick to speed up oil temp. When it gets to 30º slam throtle full foward + Mix to 100. It will chuckle but it will warm up faster. Even so its the slowest warm up spit. MIX 100% all times and use position "foward" on the pitch until u reach 200 mph or while climbing till 8 or 10 thousand feet, it really depends on your water temp. Switch to "course" pitch at that altitude and you will see temps on water drop as long as on oil. Rads at 50% once past the 200 mph. Climbing speed of 2000 feet per minute +- 190 -210 mph for a slow climb. Its best altitude performance is at 16 - 17 thousand feet. Passing that altitude keep an eye on water temp and throtle back if you have to, dont let it pass the 110 for too long. If it hits the 120 temp you will be lucky not to ruin engine. Performance at 17 - 20 thousand feet can surprise some 109´s, depending on the engagement. These tips do not apply to all other spits, they all behave diffrently. And there is alredy a bunch of threads showing the "how to" fly a spit, namely the 100 octane. G50 - The not loved one is very fun to fly. And it has lots of ammo. Warm up - There is not fuel cock!!! Just put the throtle at 15% and start the engine. Let it chuckle a bit. Watch the pressure on the left and temps on the right - remember to switch on the cylinder so you can know hows the temp on water. The G50 is so temperamental... but it has very nice things for a plane on the "blue" side. I can get it to run around 400 kms per hour level, and a slow climb of 300. Not bad for an old "maquina". There are 2 big dials on each side indicating speed. You see the triangle there around 120-150? Its the take off speed. Pull up or you will nose down. Temperatures: They dont like high or low temperatures.. ideal around 60 on oil and 2 or 2,5 indicated on water. I try to keep rpm around the 2000, much more it will overheat faster and lose speed. Its like a truck driving, you need to have a "slow" gear to make it run faster. The rads, for oil and water, should be on 25% on oil and 50% on water. If you have to open one.. just do it. Dont let it burn the engine :D |
Are you maybe using the latest official Version? Because it is just very hard to handle a Spit over 17.000 feet with the latest Beta...
|
yes using 1.08 and flying on ATAG :D
I get to 17 thousand with ease and to 23-24... 25 because i can :D |
Excellent post, Lolsav.

Same feeling here ) Continu0 Spit I !!! that one doesn't overheat , but lacks level speed, in climb it is very good. |
Nice post Lolsav.
Your right the Spit 1 is the best, no joke, but still it suffers overheating, just not as ridiculously easy as the others. The dh5-20 is also a much better than the 100oct and rotol. You can actually stand the Spit 1 on it's tail and climb at 90mph/near 3.5 thousand ft a minute with 60% rad. Still, the RAF planes are woefully slow currently, overheating issues aside. The way I see it the RAF only viable strategy currently is to take the spit 1, stand it on it's tail to 20,000 and then dive down on unaware 109s. Put it into a vertical climb with fine pitch and gain as much altitude as you can, then come down for another pass on him. Works on repka dogfight server for a few passes until the 109 starts outclimbing you. It's obvious from blue side as well, when I am a 109 on ATAG the only spit that can stand a chance is the Mk1. Also, hurricane is not worth flying at moment as it can't even come close to Spitfire turning. |

Nice post Lolsav, you've summed everything up perfectly, and I'm glad you included the G.50, as its a special breed and really nice to fly if you have the knowledge. I heard someone calling it the devils plane, but its far from it really. I think there are people that just want to hit 'I' and be launched into orbit without having to mess with anything else, however with the G.50 after take-off you need to trim the rudder and ailerons because is has a tendency to drop a wing. (can't remember which side). Once I'm out over the channel and the plane is configured, I can go and make a cup of tea and when I get back, its still chugging along the way I left it and pretty quickly at 400kmph. Its a sturdy plane too, I've managed to get it back to France many times as a flying wreck! Once I was being chased by a Spit & Hurricane after ripping up the field at Littlestone, I flew alittle too close to the radar tower, and tore half of the wing off! I re trimmed it and got it flying level again, all the way back home, half of the way a chasing Spitfire wasted his ammo trying to take me out . Of-course when the enemy see a G.50 performing an airshow over Hawkinge, you can tell they are thinking "Juicy Target!", until they see how she can really move! This should be a sticky. It's quick, informative, and RIGHT on the point! |
G.50 in the right hands can defend itself against anything... problem is it just cant shoot anything down.

+1 @Slipstream
A few weeks back I went up against Lolsav low over Manston -- he in a G50, me in a Spit 1. I figured he'd be easy meat.....I figured WRONG! LOL I was so exasperated. I had every advantage, yet he wouldn't stay put long enough for me to get a firing solution on him. Eventually I lost him against the terrain and he was gone. To my mind, he was the winner of that encounter. |
by the way:
the g50 is air cooled, so there is no water temperature, its the cylinder head temperature (thats why you can select cylinders for the gauge) ;) i also flew the g50 a few times, its not a bad airplane, but the warmup time really is too long for my taste :? |
