CPU tips for upgrade...
 

Hello everyone...
Im thinking it might be time for a CPU upgrade..
What are your thoughts?

Currently my system is a
I5-760 overclocked to 4Ghz
8gigs of ram
NVidia Gtx580 3Gig
Windows 7

Im looking at buying an I7 but not sure which one.. I will be overcklocking. Is the I7-2700k a good upgrade? will there be much better performance with an I7 at 4Ghz compared to a I5 at 4Ghz?? Or should i go for the I7-37xx or I7-39xx series? I know i will have to upgrade the motherboard too.

Im looking at a CPU that wil give me huge boost in performance...

I don't know exactly, but your system is okay so far. i do not see a big performance increase, when switching cpu, or is your current cpu fully loaded, when playing clod?

I would suggest another step first: Buy an SSD to increase your system performance. They are currently not that expensive, especially when looking on its lifetime. My suggestion in SSD with avery good all day performance is the Samsung SSD 830 model. I never heard any of my friends regreting this buy!

But if your cpu is really bottlenecking, someine please post some suggestions as it is also my interest to upgrade from my i7 920, because I would like to have more raw power. My cpu closes @ 4 ghz and getting a little unstable. Another question: What is currently on the way to the markets. Should we both wait a little? :)

Well Neither my CPU or GPU is fully loaded when playing CLOD but arent most games like that? Or is it just the bad coding from the game coders part?

When comparing my CPU on various websites my CPU is not even on the list of good gaming CPUs now a days... Why is is that my CPU is still considered good then? Why wouldnt a new Gen I7 boost my performance (I know about hyperthreading not being used in games)? Doesnt an overclocked I7-2700k to 4Ghz perform better than a I5-760 overclocked to 4Ghz?

you will get some performance boost if you are able to overclock to say 4,5 or more GHz. For gaming and flight simming i5-2500K or 2550K is enough. The maximum clocks are about the same as 2700K, but it is 100€ cheaper.
However, when upgrading CPU you have to upgrade also the motherboard at least.

Sure it will do, but a cpu do not generat that much more frames and if the load is still okay in a game like cod, I would personally wait a bit longer. Sure, the newer cpus are better, but there is no real big hit for most games since my i7 and this is even older and eats electricity as hell. SOMETIMES more important for game like arma 2 or clod is the speed of your hdd. A normal hdd could decrease your performance as well. I switched from a normal 7200rpm hdd to a raptor and noticed performance increases in stability and less stutters. And after switching again to a ssd (sata 600 speed, but I get only sata 300 speed), it was again a big step forward for games with streaming engines. although it is now only running sata 300, it still reaches a high performance. In all day life, the ssd would only run a little bit faster with sata 600. There is more speed written down on the specs, but have a look over test results in normal usage, not generic testings to find out max speed under optimum conditions. This simply never happen.

The samsung 830 at its release had a very good controller and performs good in every circumstances. But I do not know, if it is still top edge for affordable ssd. This ssd should be now very cheap. I paid nearly double the price of nowadays, and that is just 5 months ago. Sad for me, but I will perhaps buy another one. :)

CPU can increase performance, but for a big fps hit, do not expect too much by changing. But performance is not only fps!

If you're just gaming then your current cpu is fine. You won't see much of a performance boost going to a 2500, 2700 or 3770. You would get better value in gpu power but you already have a 580 so your not that far behind in the tech life cycle. I had a i7 820 before the cpu I have in my Sig now. In gaming I do see a differnce but it's not that much in terms of fps. Where I have seen a boost is in my data base development work but that's another topic.

Had you told me you want performance boost for video editing, I would have undoubtely recommended an i7.
But since your expectation refers to COD performance, you will not find it!

You already have one of the best GPUs (3Gb VRAM) so there is nothing you can do but wait for the next generation of "top of the range" NVidia cards which will hopefully come out in September.
