Mars Fiction

With a new rover landing on Mars I thought I'd post my favourite peice of Martian fiction.

Omniligual a short story by H. Beam Piper.

Published in 1957 it's a bit dated scientifically and technically, but still a good read.

Strong female characters are quiet common in his stories. This ones set in about 52AE (Atomic Era about 1997). For a while after reading this book I found it hard to resist Martini's at 17:00hours!

Any other good martian books?

Wells' War of the Worlds is technically Martian fiction, though it takes place on earth.

One of those novels you just have to read.

Cool,

I think I read it in my teens but always worth a revisit. :)

Ben Bova - Mars, Return to Mars.

Greg Bear - Moving Mars

Also although John Wyndham didn't really specify Mars IIRC, Day of the Triffids, The Chrysalids, The Midwich Cuckoos. All classics.

The Martian Chronicles - Ray Bradbury

There must be 100's ... just a few classics from famous authors that come to mind ...

Stranger in a Strange Land (Robert Heinelen)
Barsoom (Edgar Rice Burroughs)
Out of the Silent Planet (CS Lewis)
Marvin the Martian (Looney Tunes) well not really a book
Sands of Mars (Arthur C Clarke)
The Martian Way (Isaac Asimov)

Of course Mars also features in numerous movies and TV shows ranging from Dr Who to Babylon 5.
