Churchill's few documentary

Maybe this is old news to some of you but I thought I should mention it anyway since I couldn't find any thread about it.

While working my way through the "Spitfire Ace" episodes on Youtube, I came to think about a documentary mentioned in "The most dangerous enemy" by Stephen Bungay. I did a search and found that it has been up on Youtube for about two months now. About 400 views so far and maybe it is everyone on this forum except me ;)

I haven't watched it yet but it is from 1985 and at that time a lot of the pilots were still around. For those of you who haven't read "The most dangerous enemy" (shame on you) I can recommend reading the available pages on Amazon.

Anyway, here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JS_4wioaVBc

New docs are nice in all their HD "glory". But this one (old one) is one of the best Ive ever seen. Not only because "the few" are telling their stories...

big thanks

Yes great documentary... far from the "Piece of Cake" view that prevail so much today :-|
Those guys were real heroes.

Brilliant - thanks for posting. Have downloaded it too
Was great to see Bob Doe - he looked so young in '85. RIP.

Good post.

At about 36 minutes thre's a reunion with the pilots who suffered burns. Terrible injuries and still needing treatment in 1985.

That was a big fault with regard to the Spitfire and Hurricane. A large petrol tank in front of the instrument panel

Best Regards,

109 pilots sat on their fuel tank. It might not hve been more comfortable ;)

No, seriously, the mechanical linkage of valves pressure directly in the cockpit might hve been more the problem when it comes to catastrophic tank failure (e.g tank burning) as the low pressure point was.... the cockpit zone (outside air pressure being raised by dyn press).

Of course this is a strong point with egg packed engines and direct injection. They might hve worked on the eng ctrling feature for late Merlins.
