Multiplayer & Mods

Hello all.

I've been playing IL-2 1946 for a year or so now and I'm getting quite used to how it all works, barring FMB... :-P

I have two main questions for the wider community regarding mods and multiplayer capabilities.

1) Mods. Is it wise (or necessary) to download any sort of mod packs, for example UP 3.0, HSFX 5.0 or JTSM v2? And what would you all recommend?

2) Multiplayer. I enjoy the thrill of online combat with other people with real skills. Before I go signing up to Hyperlobby or somesuch, I want to be sure that I'm not making a mistake by joining something useless.

I thank you all in advance, as I look forward to broadening my IL-2 Sturmovik experience, at least until Cliffs of Dover is re-released in Aussieland...

Tally-ho, ;)
Scott.

UP3 is popular, although joining a squad is the best idea :)

Thanks for your reply.

I searched up and only found 2 online IL-2 squads in Australia.. surely I must have missed something.

Also, if I sign up to a squadron, do I still need Hyperlobby to connect to it?

I currently have "clean" install, UP2, UP3 and HSFX all installed (actually all in all 7 separate installs :) ). It's all safe, just keep the installs separate and in good order. The method I use is to have a postfix on all of the installs, and the just remove the postfix from the install I want to use. As in, my install-in-use -folder is "Il-2 1946" and the ones that aren't have some postfix like: "Il-2 1946 UP2" for example.

Hyperlobby is THE method of connecting to any public server.

I've got 4.10.1, I'm not sure if that would make UP3 uncompatible? Looking through it, I'm amazed by some of the stuff I'm seeing, but is it really worth it?

And when I download, will it just be added on straight away?

I wonder also if having UP3 will stop me joining any online squads.

Yes and no. Some servers seem to get picky and might not let you in even if UP3 is disabled. I use separate installs of Il-2 1946 to deal with this.

You can get along without mods, they just increase the amount of servers available to you. Is it worth it, well, I'd say yes.

Nope. They have to be installed manually. The mod business indeed requires some degree of computer savviness. So, not for the weak hearted.. or have some close help at the ready. Getting into teamspeak with someone who knows what to do is recommended. As suggested, a squad might be a good option :)

Certainly not. Or I heavily doubt that any squad would ban their users from using mods. Atleast in non-squad games. You can always use a "clean" install if the squad requires it.

Hi, how about asking on the Ubi Squadron page http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/frm/f/48310655
Most squad host their own games but some use hyperlobby. The info will be on the Squads home page. It is better to join a squad as you get to know people and even meet them at airshows :)
Good luck.

Hello again.

Thanks for all your replies, I'm starting to get a broader picture of how it all works.

Just reading up on online play in CLOD, it appears to be much simpler in that the game comes with some servers already present in the multiplayer component? Here's the thread I've been reading: http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthr...ewpost&t=27286

So I'm wondering now, I might stay off the multiplayer in 1946 if it will be that much easier in CLOD. As for UP3, I'm still tossing up whether to grab it or not, just to bide my time until CLOD comes out in Australia. (For some reason it was withdrawn soon after release - development issues I think).

Thanks again,
Scott.

Yes, CloD is more straight forward in this matter as it has the in-game lobby and Steam keeps your game up to date.

And, what I've heard, currently (not in the near future) mods can't(read: "shouldn't") be used in MP as Steam VAC(Valve Anti-Cheat System) will not allow them and might ban you from MP... so no mod hassle either :)
