Ati 6970 2gb and hexacore cpu still stutters

Hello gents!
My curiosity took over today when I installed a radeon 6970 2gb intpo my 2010 mac pro with a 3.33 hexacore W3680 cpu and 32gb RAm and windows on a corsair SSD

Unfortunately rthe new card an XFX radeon HD6970 3gb causes just as much stutters when grass is turned on, as my old 5870 1gb card

the thing is when I turn all settings to the lowest and even run 1280x720, if i have grass checked at that setting it still causes stutter. unchecking grass gives me a very smooth gameplay though.

The silliest thing is that I never really see grass when flying, only when on ground and crashing lol, but it has really made me nuts and i want to know what else coudl be the problem?

I've seen youtube videos where people seem to fly just fine on 6970's so there must be something else?

I tried to change the affinity in task manager just to see if COD doesn't like all 12 virtual cpu's, I also set Launcher.exe to high priority but no changes at all.

I've also tried changing the catalyst settings with no luc so I'm clueless.

Luckily I can return the card (otherwise I wouldnt have tried hehe) but surelly my specs should be able to run stutter free with grass no?

I know Il2 is buggy, but since i saw so many videos with smooth gameplay I thought the graphicscard was the issue here.

Thanks!

S!

It is not your GPU or CPU to blame but the code of the game. Many videos are not actual gameplays but a recording at certain settings so it looks smooth when played back. For now I uninstalled the sim and wait for it to mature more. Other games run flawlessly on my AMD rig.

nVidia cards has less problems.

Didn't know that about grass. Gonna try it.

Thanks for the replies, Flanker 35M, do you mean the recording software is making it look smooth? Because any setting in the game, the grass is going to cause the stutter even if the settings are lowest possible.

Vengeanze: yeah i bet they do, although i picked ati card since I'm using minidisplayport, hey by the way how's your iMac coping with COD on that graphicscard?

Peace!

Hey man I just bought the msi lightning xtreme 580 3gb and I have stutters really low due to the grass as well. I can have everything maxed except for buildings set at high and grass off and I get around 40 fps over london and 60 anywhere else. This just shows that Oleg still needs to work on their engine. You are right though there is no reason to be rendering grass until the game is a hundred feet or less from the ground. You can't see the grass until you are about to land.

Thanks man for the reply, good to know even the best card has the grass stutter.
Anyhow as you say,not visible above 100 metres, barely visible in the way we're supposed to be playing it.

Glad to know, I can die in peace!! :D

yea no problem, btw I have a friend with an Alienware mx15 i believe. I know he has the i7 Q820: 8 cores @ 1.73-3.06 with a 5850 graphics card. He is considering upgrading to the 6970 but he doesn't know if he will see a drastic graphics performance increase. What do you think?

Also did u install the card yourself or did you send it in? He says he thinks he can do it but as someone who has taken apart a laptop before I recommended to pay someone else. I just remember all of the things i had to take apart before I even got to the MB.

Oh i'm sorry, I have been talking about the non mobile 6970, I have a mac pro, the stationary mac, although I also have a 2010 macBOOK pro with a m6870 but I don't want to install windows on that one since the disk is so small.

For me, the 6970 vs the 5870 (the big stationary cards) the difference was fairly big, I could run everything maxed with grass off in 2560x1440 at 30-66 fps while the 5870 has to drop down to 1920x1080 or even 1600x900 in resolution to do the same fps.

In the end there was too much of a hassle to have both cards in my mac pro since I need the 5870 to run in osx.

If he has the budget i'd really get a new card though cause it was smoooth :)

Well, the 2560 res of this 27'' screen is killing my frames. On 1920 I get 40-60 no problems with all maxed. But everything is sooo crisp in native so I run a mix of settings and get 30-35 avg and nice quality. My hope is with code optimization to give me 5 or more frames.
Btw, I overclocked the card from 680/900 to 860/1100. Got a small heatproblem but working on that. :-)
Ohh and yeah, stutters alot!!
