CotA Gloomy Quest Questions

Does hiring a companion at the Merc guild constitute joining that guild and disqualify you from the Gloomy quest? (I think it doesn't but want to be sure)

Also does joining the Hunter guild disqualify you from the Gloomy quest? Or does the Gloomy quest only pertain to joining race guilds?
