Right click on the map, and select "Tools". Four buttons appears on screen:
- drag the map
- distance between two points
- angle between two course
- place markings on the map

mouse wheel is the zoom in all mode.

Very good these navigational stuffs, but what I miss, the devices concerning the altitude (from sea level), and it would be good, if it would show the airports' data. Altitude above sea level, runaway directions(s), air pressure value on ground level and sea level, soil wind direction, wind speed, weather info (if there will be dynamic weather in the game)... In RL you can ask these from air traffic control, but in game you have no info...

Thanks for the post (Raaid) and thnksfor the answer (Tom).

I was wondering about that, too (I was expecting it would be "in-flight" navigation tools :) )

I don't think they had the same level of ATC then as they do today though... nice to be able to ask and receive answer ;) as well as declare emergency landing, etc, etc.

 You have to ask take off or landing clearance, gives a landing order, runaway direction, ect. Not five ppl landing simultaneously onto the airport crosswise from five directions

Totally working ATC (under communications menu) heavy programming task, i do not believe in the fact that capacity would be free onto him. But if you obtain the ATIS informations clicking with a mouse on the map, it faster and plainer.
