Call sign

Hi what is the default call sign of the player? Luton 2?
I don't understand who are talking to who in the squadron
And who is my wingman picket in flight??

Vengeanze 06-04-2011 05:01 PM

- "Luton X to Luton Y, take the third plane of the fourth element in the first flight"
- "Luton X, I'll be your wingman"
- "Luton X, I'll be your wingman"
- "Luton X, I'll be your wingman"
- "Luton X, I'll be your wingman"
- "Luton X, I'll be your wingman"
...Yeah I get it. Shut up!!

I ignore the chatter and hunt for meself.

My guess is: Look at the ID of your plane, specifically the letter to the right of the RAF roundel on the fuselage. A is 1, B is 2, C is 3... and so on.

Convention for Elements as it was in Il-2 1946: Normally, odd numbers were Wing leaders, even numbers were Wingmen. Though I didn't check if that still holds true in CoD. But honestly, it hardly even matters here, as long as there is no radio functionality whatsoever for the player.
That killed around 40% of immersion right at the get-go for me.

Not exactly.

Pilots in the RAF where assigned a particular plane that was attached to a flight. Letter ranges from A-L were assigned to A and B flight covered M-Z, however if a pilot was moved from A to B flight, he'd sometimes take his plane with him. I'm bold enough to link to my squadron website, that has the full historical explanation and a picture of the real 609 operations board for reference for you guys:

You can see the inconsitency in one short glance, as the CO in that particular time was actually with Blue flight, tactical marking PR-S.

Luckily, a large part of all that is represented in the sim currently, although not accurately to some extent.

To identify your position in-game, locate your position during the flight. If you are flying left and behind the guy leading the gaggle, you are most likely "--Callsign--2", if you are right side of the 2nd flight "--Callsign--6" etc.

always too low and far behind. What's the callsign then?

Redroach 06-04-2011 09:20 PM

okay, in the 609th RAF, it was a little different. Be sure to take that into account, OP!

Not only in the 609th, basically in any RAF squadron ;) Fortunately a lot of those units keep websites with archives and pictures online, there's a lot of those flightboards you can find there.

If you're always low and behind you can at least see what your position on takeoff is or pause the game directly aftert you spawn. That's when you should still be close to your position ;)

Click on "player plane" next to fly and your callsign is listed to the right on the side of... surprisingly enough... "Callsign" :)
