BattleArea property in mission files

What is the purpose of the BattleArea in mission files? Each mission file contains a BattleArea property which, after playing around with the full mission builder, appears to define a grid over a user-defined portion of the map. However, I haven't found any description of what it does or how it's used. Any ideas?

I believe it is simply meant as a visual indicator to show players on the minimap the area where they are most likely to find the action.

It also re-grids a smaller section of the map for easier coordinates reference. It is almost totally customizable
