CE Map Errors
First off, I am not whining. The CE map (or chart!) is a 'nice to have' but I thought it might be worth pointing out some errors which could be misleading/confusing. After all, it can only be a good thing to get things as accurate and realistic as possible in our 'game'. I'm not expecting the map to be redone, I just hope this is helpful info to anyone using the map.
Some airfields are marked in the right place but with the wrong name. Some that are marked, I'm not entirely certain there were ever airfields there. e.g. The airfield shown on the Isle of Wight (the small island just off shore from Portsmouth) is actually Bembridge, not Sandown. Sandown airfield is more towards the centre of the island, and is not shown. The airfield shown as Tangmere is actually RAF Ford. The actual Tangmere is not shown. The airfield shown as Wilmington never exisited, not according to my 1942 chart anyway. There is a village called Willingdon there, but no airfield. Perhaps there was an emergency strip there? I don't know. Anyway, I'm sure there are more things, but you get the idea. PPanPan |
there was a willingdon airbase, but it was a US bomber airfield I think, not likely to be relevant to the battle of britain.
scratch that......I'm talking crap, there is a memorial to a crash site there, but willingdon airbase I heard of is not even in the UK so it seems. p.s. another thing....wasn't wilmington on sea a fictional town made up for the 'dad's army' TV series? |
I don't understand the lack of Manston (is that what Margate is supposed to be?) and since when was Calais's local airfield called Boulogne (not to be confused with Boulogne’s local airfield of the same name)?
It's pretty poor work, all things considered, especially because 10 minutes with Google could have corrected most of the errors. Does not inspire confidence in the QA process and suggests – possibly wrongly – a give-a-sh1t- attitude. Quote:

Dad's Army was Warmington-On-Sea . . . . . . . :-)

Whilst we are in this corner of Kent, the fun continues. The airfield at Canterbury just doesn't exist. The airfield marked Lympne is actually Hawkinge and the airfield marked Littlestone is actually Lympne. Maybe the map is coded in case it gets in the wrong hands?! |

the phrase 'stupid boy' comes to mind right now. |
Actually....while on this topic, are all these inconcistencies purely related to the CE map or are these errors manifested in the game map too? i don't have the CE.

OK on first inspection of the map in FMB, Manston is more or less ok, but ramsgate airfield is a massive paved runway?.......big 'NO', ramsgate municipal airport was always a small grass field, the airfield marked as Maidstone would in all probability be West Malling, and there is no sign of Detling, and that willingdon airfield 'is' also on the mission map, so there is some 'fixin' needed.
|
OK, I stand corrected, sort of. I didn't know Ramsgate airfield existed, so assumed the one marked as Ramsgate on the CE map was Manston. Either way, the map should show 2 airfields, Manston and Ramsgate.
You are right about West Malling and Detling ... see below. |
