Guys, watch your GPU's temp or they might get toasted playing CoD
Hi all,
This post is essentially a post to warn all the community, but specially to those ones who have SLI/Crossfire like me installed on their rig, because the far too high temperatures could reach the GPU's when playing Cliffs of Dover, specially the one dealing with all the graphic processing tasks. As you can see in my signature, I've got 2x nVidia 285 GTX 1GB DDR3 SLI GPU, and they usually reach 76-77 ºC temperature when playing ArmA 2 at full (usually 285's are OK working up to 80 ºC but if temp go higher it could be a risk), but both GPU's are used because that game is SLI/Crossfire compliant, so all the graphic processing tasks is balanced among these two GPU's. In Cliffs of Dover, either if you have SLI/Crossfire enabled or not you should keep an eye on the temperature of the GPU is carrying with all the graphic processing because, as there is no SLI/Crossfire support available on the game yet, only one GPU is being used by CoD and its temperature has reched 88 ºC, which is far too high, even for very graphic demanding/consuming games like ArmA 2. In this image you can see the temperature of each of my cards along with the GPU % used by the game. As you can see, only one of the two GPU's is being used by CoD, and the temperature is 88 ºC. (I've seen it reaching 90 ºC  and of course I stopped playing at that very moment) https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_3.../overheat2.png I think we have to be careful till the dev team releases an update patch including SLI/Crossfire support to the game, which will certainly help to balance the work between the two GPU's and therefore decrease the temperatures they're working at. I know working temperatures for GPU's are different depending on the model, and also it's quite depending on the cooling system of the rig, but this is just to warn you to watch this, because if you don't and specially now with summer coming soon , you might find that after 30 minutes playing the game you get one of those fancy blue screens which could mean that you have a warm and nice toasted GPU, so be very careful. I hope dev team is aware of this and brings us SLI/Crossfire compatibility as soon as possible, because it is a must for the game. S! |
I'm using one overclocked GTX 570 at 850/1700/2000 stock cooling and it's usually up at 60 degrees after running 100% for a while.
Yep, it's a graphics demanding game :p Gotten a LOT better with the Kegetys fix ;) |
While the game may be demanding of your gpu's, I don't believe you have much to worry about unless your preference of what temp the gpu should be is higher than normal. Those cards can go much higher than it is currently. I wouldn't worry about it, but if it really concerns you so much perhaps you should put a fan on it or upgrade your case. You could always turn some settings down so it doesn't work so hard also. Just sayin'...
Taken from Nvidia's specs for the GTX285: Thermal and Power Specs: Maximum GPU Temperature (in C) 105 C |
Yep my Zotac Amp 480GTX reaches 73 deg, that's the same as where Crysis Warhead and Crysis2 get it to on max settings when a big pyrotecnic firefight is underway

Try MSI Afterburner software ;)

BTW, There is a newer Precision than the one you are using, it's v2.0.2  |
Thats nothing, I have tri sli on my GTX 480s with my EVGA SR-2
Youd expect it to chew some heat, but sadly due to the developers releasing a poorly tested and very buggy piece of crap SLI doesnt work amongst various other problems |
