Truth about epilepsy and why the filter is NONSENSE

From this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seizure_trigger

"In some epileptics, flickering or flashing lights, such as strobe lights, can be responsible for the onset of a tonic clonic, absence, or myoclonic seizure[14]. This condition is known as photosensitive epilepsy, and in some cases, the seizures can be triggered by activities that are harmless to others, such as watching television or playing video games, or by driving or riding during daylight along a road with spaced trees, thereby simulating the "flashing light" effect. Some people can suffer a seizure as a result of blinking one's own eyes[15]. Contrary to popular belief, this form of epilepsy is relatively uncommon, accounting for just 3% of all cases[16]. In all other epileptics, such lights are no more capable of triggering a seizure than in a non-epileptic person."

So that ridiculous small amount of people that is photosensitive, probably doesn't even play videogames. There are a lot of possible triggers, and if someone didn't have seizures due to flashing lights in earlier stages in life, the risk they will get it now is incredibly small.

And that fear of being sued is stupid as well. Ever heard of anyone filing a lawsuit against a disco?

I agree with that, but you'd be better off posting this on ubisoft forum, they came up with this filter, so they seem to poses the logic behind it.

complaining about it being a small amount of people who are so afflicted is irrelevant. all it takes is one who was previously unaware of their condition.

i think i would find it both tragic and hilarious if some of the people who are bitching about epilepsy being considered in the game's design were unfortunate enough to have a grand mal seizure after turning off the filter.

Or a television news channel? They regularly warn of flashing images.

The filter and game protection isn't the issue here IMO. The reasons why it was introduced this late into the game when the majority of bug fixes + optimizations occur are.

Why didn't the team know about this in the beginnings, when they designed the engine / game? Why did they "find" a publisher in Fall last year and more importantly why was it UbiSoft again?

The only way I can comprehend the logic behind this is if they were told to implement this or scrap the project. Which again rises the question of the selection of the publisher...

All this isn't the major problem here. Few people that managed to purchase the game report terrible performance even with the Filter disabled. Weather the Filter is the reason why it wasn't optimized for the last 3 months to a reasonable level - I will not speculate/guess. The fact of the matter is: we can count the number of people that are running it relatively OK in this out-of-the-box condition - on fingers of both hands. If this doesn't reach playable state very soon it will hit bottom very fast!

I don't have an account on that forum. Maybe someone else will post it? It's in all our interest anyway.

they probably did, hence the warnings. at the very least people will have complained, it was investigated and it was found to be a public health matter.

Sounds like we're screwed them. Im not buying it now till this whole epilepsy thing is resolved. Maybe Ubi just wanted people with that condition to play the game? To that I hope the .3% of the people who are actually photosensitive enjoy it now, and give Ubi the $$ return they want.

Congrats!!

It seems someone already posted something similar on the Ubi forum:
