Fw-190 ground handling

Hello all, just something i've always noticed was that the fw-190 series seems to be very sluggish at initial movement/beginning to taxi. To me it seems almost stuck in the mud, switching to bf-109s and they roll right away. Does anyone else sense this also? Its not a game killer just something i noticed.

The engines were de-rated some time ago and since then they behaved this way.

Try it with full fuel and a SC 500 .............. needs plenty of runway :)

Disable auto prop. pitch and give it another try. ;)

No need for that.. from standstill, just wall the throttle (110%) and make sure you stand on the right pedal. Also push your stick max forward, no flaps, and you'll beam down the runway. Only apply take off flaps when your tail wheel lifts (that's if this is even necessary).

With a SC500, only apply flaps when you cross the 2/3rd mark and hit full flaps. You'll slip off the runway like teflon...

I agree. I've done a 0 to 100 mph speed comparison between a clean, empty A8 with 10% fuel using 110% power with wep and an SBD-5 with 1600lb bomb, 100% fuel, cowl flaps and canopy open using 110% throttle and the times are almost identical (just over 17 seconds) even though the 190 has less than half the power loading. I'm figuring about 7700lbs/2050hp versus 10700lbs/1350hp. Even if those numbers aren't entirely accurate (very possible) it still shouldn't be a close race - lol. The only thing I can figure is the Kommandogerat of the 190 the Russians first tested wasn't adjusted properly (I've seen a movie of it, it looked a bit like a Frankenstein).

:D

Didn't they use the wrong prop as well on that A-8 ?

This one definitely had the wrong prop for testing, it was shot off by the pilot.

"But, we needed to verify the Focke-Wulf tactical flight characteristics for ourselves. This opportunity arose on 16 January 1943, thanks to a synchronizer failure. Warrant Officer H. Brandt from I/JG54 shot off his propeller blades with a cannon round and he was unable to get his aircraft to his side of the front line. His airplane landed on the ice of Lake Ladoga and he tried to escape on skis, but was caught by Russian patrols. The captured fighter aircraft was urgently evacuated to the rear and then handed over to Engineer-Captain P. S. Onopriyenko, a lead engineer, for testing at the Air Forces Scientific Research Institute."
