VIII Century Gold edition/steam

I bought it through steam. I went to play online and it said I have an older version and asked me to update. When I did it simply got out of the game. I tried it again and the same thing happened.
The whole point of getting this game was to play online.

What's going on?

Seems to me the game should be ready to go, once Steam gets a hold of it but that's just me.
