Nvidia surround - 3 monitors - portrait or landscape?
I understand that the config can be changed between portrait and landscape with-in a couple minutes. The question, I guess would depend on what type of plane you most fly - bomber or fighter? Would a portrait layout be better for a fighter? Here are some numbers for a 1920 by 1080 (aspect ratio of 1:1.778 - a 1:1 aspact ratio would be a square monitor) resolution monitor.
Portrait would give a 1920x3240 or an aspect ratio of .592 - A bit more than twice as wide as it is high. Landscape would deliver 5760x1080 at an aspect ratio of 5.33 - More than 5 times as wide as it is high. Any perferences? |
where can you change landscape and portrait in the conf ini?

Hotep,
i think it largely boils down to personal choice if you want to use 3 monitors in portrait mode, try it. there are some strong arguments for it, for ex that you can see your rear view mirror, scenery/sky ahead, and instruments all at the same time. somebody on the ubi forums was a strong proponent of this and used his 3 monitors that way note: you can easily setup the config ini to use monitors in portrait mode for il2, it works well arguments against using portrait mode for 3 monitors: 1) lcd screens are designed to be viewed in a particular position to provide best video quality, and for most current widescreen lcd's this means using them as intended in landscape mode (it has to do with pixel orientation, the image wont be as crisp and clean in portrait position) 2) peripheral vision is what is mostly lacking in flightsims, increasing it makes a big difference in improving immersion. imho it is better to see 2x more on either side of you then "waste" screen space by constantly seeing your instruments and in-cockpit objects (except the mirror of course) it will however come down to personal choice, for me the peripheral vision is more important :) |
Thank you for your input zapatista.
mmm.. yes... valid point about the monitor dot pitch, although with most newer monitors it is less of an issue. I forgot to mention that this will be used in conjunction with a TrackIR system. I created a couple images to better illustrate the relation beteween our field of view and the monitor setup. I am not a opthamologist and I'm sure the terms used here are incorrect but here's the gist of it... I made some assumptions - like the human eye being the equivialnt of a 35mm lens - anyway the square with the 'x' represents the boarder of our visual focus - in hindsight i guess it should have been a circle. http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/picture...&pictureid=500 http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/picture...&pictureid=499 The portrait setup better represents the shape of what human eyes can see. I think I'm leaning towards that setup. The landscape setup does give an exceptional/exagerated perifial advantage long one axis (mainly horizontal). In the end I'll experiment with both. |
one issue about having all 3 monitors in portrait mode is that for 90% of you'r flying you will be wasting 33% of your screen real estate (because that will show in cockpit detail like side panels, controls, and dashboard etc) , and those are all wasted pixels your cpu/gpu have to push, hence seriously affecting your frame rates (or your pocketbook if you have to buy more high end hardware)
my personal choice would be to have on large central widesceen monitor directly in front of you, with a smaller monitor on either side in portrait mode. that way you double your monitor total screen area and significantly iimprove your peripheral vision, yet only have to push pixels that are the equivalent of 2 decent size widescreens (at 1920 x 1200). my intention is to put a 19' in portrait mode on either side of the 27' i am using now, and i still have a spare 19' from yrs ago, so only need to add one more 19' to make this work (which is cheap nowadays). ideally i'd have a 20' on either side because then these dont need to be tilted to portrait mode to match up in bezel and resolution (being 1600 wide by 1200 high), but that means buying 2 more monitors which wont be usefull for anything else and is a bit of a waste of $ for now using 3 monitors in that configuration looks something like this http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/attachm...1&d=1281965142 |
