About maximizing turn rates...

Hey fallas,

I was playing this guy yesterday - we both were flying the Spit IX. He had this strategy of taking it way low - under 400 feet, and out-turning me. No matter WHAT I did (we played several matches) to change the sensitivity on my PS3 controller, he ALWAYS out-turned me at the floor like that. Was he using a joystick maybe? Or is there some secret to fighting at that level that I just don't get..?

This dude always ended up getting the firing angle on me, lol it was interesting trying to figure out how he was getting more out of the exact same plane than me... by the way, he wasn't doing any nifty manuevers or anything I don't believe - just out turning me, although he may have been using the vertical axis more or less - these were sim games and it's hard to keep your eye on the opponent with the ps3 controller, especially when you're in a full turn flying that low to the ground.

Any thoughts? I need to learn as much as I can to be a good wingman in the future PS3 tournament that edal I think is organizing.

He is probably using a little less throttle. Also make sure you set your flaps to combat this will let you fly at a reduced speed without stalling.

If you use the default control layout most peole stay around 100% because of the awkwardness of the right stick ie. look, throttle, and rudder. If you do what a lot of people are doing now they are using the AV8R layout and your throttle stays at 55% (with R2 to throttle up and L2 throttle down) so you are going slower with a tighter turn radius. I myself don't because I don't like the O button as my trigger.

I was playing lastnight against a friend and we were both using spit IX and most of the time I was able to out turn him but I don't know what control layout he was using.

watch ur speed: optimal turn speed is around 280-310 for the spit if i remember right
use vertical axis, combat flaps and rudder
and try n keep an eye on the guy... best way is too use the aviator layout with the pad imo: it allows for independent use of all controls and makes it ezr to look around

how do you use the av8r layout with a pad? is that a ps3 thing?

not sure about the xbox... while in game go to option - controls - press square (!) to choose controller layout and then scroll right to get to aviator layout- apply. They dont provide the visual map for all the buttons functions and im guessing theres are a few changes between xbox and ps3 cp but do a practice run with this set up and u'll figure it out in no time

Thanks for your input guys, I didn't know how to get to the other layout option so I'll try with that one tonight.

And yep, I tried turning with lower speed, using the vertical axis, combat flaps, lol dude kept out-turning me - but I'll give it another go soon. The one thing that helps I'm sure is keeping your eye on the other plane, something I could never do in the normal layout.

I'll let you know how it works out...

Hes probably inducing a minor stall and using it to manouver. Just catching it right as its about to dip a wing can give you a tighter turn when done properly.

Set the spit 9's elevator sensitivity to 6 notches below the top, then you won't wobble while you're turning. Every wobble in your flight path can be used by your opponent to gain angles.

must be a ps3 thing on xbox, go into options, press x for controls then it just tells you the controls no way to change them and no other options. The control scheme when I plug my av8r in is different to the pad but I cant see away to change them. Hopefully the patch (whenever it finally drops on the box) will allow for customizable controls.

actually, whats the trim button for the av8r layout. i think its B but not entirely sure as no where on the xbox version tells you.

ON the xbox controls page you can move the selector at the bottom to see the buttons for each flight mode (eg arcade/realistic/sim) and it should list the buttons for the stick in there.
