If you're flying as the Japanese, don't overheat your engine. :)

Generally, the Japanese planes don't seem to have quite as much ability to abuse their engines as some other nationalities do. Fly at 90% power in combat, 50% power when cruising. Reserve 100% or higher power for just a few seconds when you really need it.

Anyhow, if you're flying the A6M2 or the Ki-43 you don't want to be flying too fast since those are pure maneuver fighters. Use your maneuverability and climb ability instead of trying to use pure speed.

Run your "prop pitch" levels at 90%, keep the rads partially open and don't worry about it too much. The worst offender is the Ki-61 but even that is manageable with a slightly reduced prop pitch/engine RPM.

Seconding the suggestion to fly with radiators at least partially open most of the time. By now it's sufficiently instinctive that I forgot to mention it.

Something else to consider is that many Japanese campaigns are fought on tropical maps. Any plane will overheat in those conditions.
