Bi Plane

I've sure i've seen a bi plane in this game, but i don't know what it is called, although i believe it is a russian plane. Does anybody know the name?

Zatoichi_Sanjuro 09-16-2009 03:03 AM

I-153 I think.

Spitfire23 09-16-2009 03:05 AM

yes it is called the Polikarpov Po-2 and it is indeed a russian bi-pane

there is also the russian Polikarpov I-153 the updated version of the I-15

Soviet Ace 09-16-2009 03:17 AM

I-153 Chaika & Po-2 (which was actually a 1920s plane!) The Chaika is the fighter, looking like a I-16 and I-15. While the Po-2 is a trainer, bomber, and reconnaissance plane.

Lexandro 09-16-2009 03:20 AM

And there both bloody hard to shoot down with a good pilot at the stick. Arcade mode they are WAY to good at the whole turning battle, using them feels like cheating to me. Different story in Realistic mode but they are still super effective when used by a good pilot.

Soviet Ace 09-16-2009 03:25 AM

The I-153 is meant to be a turn & burn fighter, the Po-2 not so much. But if you want to gun down a Po-2, just come up from below, or from the top, coming down on its nose so the gunner can't get a shot ;) Whatever you do, don't turn with a Chaika, it will be your last. LOL

IS that because they have so much lift?

Its the I-153 and you unlock it by completing the single mission chapter of "Battle of Stalingrad." I unlocked it yesterday and did one training mission with it and was going to try a landing and when i thottled down to "0" the engine cut out and the prop stopped spinning and i glided in for a landing, but was unable to start the engine so i had to quit out. I wonder if it is even possible to somehow re-fire engine !!!

Nope. Thats the risk you run with flying the aircraft.

lol yep I kept doing that when I first flew it. Now ive learnt never to push the stick forward to decend, always roll over and pull back.

I wonder why the I-153 doesn't have a in-game cockpit. Thought that only applied to Bombers and german aircraft. Is it the same with the Po-2?

Arnow 09-18-2009 10:46 AM

It is the same with the Po-2, and so is it with all other aircraft axis or allied that you will unlock in the game, if they are not part of a same type of airplane (yak 1, 3, 9 etc).

I'm not complaining, but the truth is, out of the box, there were cockpits ONLY for aircraft used in the campaign mode. The lack of cockpit didn't apply to german planes only.

biplanes usually have huge amounts of lift- two wings you see. this gives them greater manouverability than most monoplanes. the greater speed of monoplanes by WW2 meant biplanes were obsolete.

Wissam24 09-18-2009 07:04 PM

Yeah that was what I assumed.

beaker126 09-18-2009 07:21 PM

I never had the engine cut out on me. Is it only on sim, or what. And why? Is it because like the WWI planes it didn't have it's own starter?

trk29 09-19-2009 01:34 AM

I got the po-2 today and used it in CTA and it totally dominated. I landed once then I circled the runway like a buzzard and when someone would try to land I would drop my bombs on them. Haha this plane is fun, only one wish for me is I want a forward gun on this.

It would probably be a serious pain in the neck to fly, if it had a forward firing gun. If you read the specs of the plane, you'd see why. But they could always have your pilot armed with a pistol? Just like in WW1, the planes used rifles and pistols to shoot at one another. Didn't work well, but it was a shot :P

That would be something to see in IL-2 :P

I still haven't unlocked the po-2 even though I've been dying too. The I-153 became my easy favorite as soon as I got it, and I can't wait to see how the other bi plane handles.

I took the po-2 out for a test run in training mode, spent about 10 mins sightseeing and completely ignoring the A.I. which was also in a po-2, with no forward firing guns I didn't see hoe it could hurt me, then, I landed in a field and it bombed me!

Hahaha, that's stylish.

I've thought about using the Po-2 in CTA, since the low speed would force the opponents to zoom and boom, which franky, not a lot of players are very good at. However, when I had one playing against me, I wasn't as impressed by it as I hoped.. Maybe it would've been more intimidating if the pilot had carried an MP40 with him .
