How safe is flying?

I know there are a few real pilots on here so id thought id ask, just how safe flying is? I love flight games and films but frigin hate the experience myself (odd?)
I'm flying out to NYC on Saturday (gutted cause it'll only give me one day to play BOP before i go) and im not looking forward to the flying bit :(

Think the most recent statistic for commercial airliner travel is 1 fatal accident per 2 million flights*. 1:2000000 are good odds in my book!

* according to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) figures

Got that right :-P

Definitely safer then driving, just an example: my friend was driving on the 101 interstate, the road was dry, it was on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon, light traffic, the usual stuff, when all of a sudden an airplane crashed into him....
:-P

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Flying is very safe man, when i first started my training i was scared beyond belief (why?) turns out that I have this trust issue who people flying(my flight instructor like to screw with me...), however when im flying its totally fine.

Statistically it's the safest way to travel. If you're flying in Africa it's a different story due to terrible maintenance, but everywhere else the controls are quite strict and airline pilots usually are well selected.

I enjoy every flight - it's a real pleasure for me and I plan to get a PPL soon

I have a friend that flies, and the regulations appear to be SOOO strict, you cant even cough without radio-ing in first and having the flight frame checked :) you're 100% safe, go for it, you'll have a great time. just dont try going over the white house... restricted air-space and all that, no-one wants to see F/A-18's next to them :)

Keep that figure in your head when microsoft proudly announces that future boing/airnus model xxx will use one or more of their software in the cockpit, and watch it drop like a rock ;)

Safer than trains or buses?? Just curious where you read this.

House MD 221B 09-03-2009 09:49 PM

well known fact

Kamak86 09-03-2009 10:35 PM

Its common knowlege that flying is the safest way to travel.

Omykron 09-04-2009 01:40 AM

you must tell where are you going to fly.

if it will be in some dark areas of Africa that just being there are dangerous. Flying is dangerous as being on ground. Also, some air carries in the globe can be dangerous to fly, due maintenance policy or even lack of experience in the first row (i.e. in the Flight Deck) with poor maintenance.

But when in global safety record, it is safe enough. don't worry, enjoy your fly.

FOZ_1983 09-04-2009 01:43 AM

only time flying is really considered dangerous is when you have someone on your 6 trying to shoot you down!!

then i'd start to worry a little.

I love flying (other than the screaming babies always sat right next to me). Get the window seat and enjoy the view. I've only once been a bit shaken by a flight and that was landing in Cozumel last time. We had high winds & the pilot turned us around the island at such a low altitude I swear I could make out the leaves in the jungle below. After it we had landed though I wanted to do it again

As a physiologist I think about it like this...(and I used to fly qantas alot)

If your airliner goes down you'll be travelling with so much momentum that the "sudden stop" at the bottom will be at VERY LEAST a 60G hit on your body.. at 60Gs+ necks break, and sometimes heads come off completely with such speed that the inertial (and probably centripetal cos your head will be spinning with alot of top spin) forces would massively disrupt any little activity that might remain in your brain, which probably wouldn't be oxygenated too well by now anyway...

i.e. you'll shit yourself on the way down but you won't feel a thing when you get there.

The last thing on your mind will be the rest of your major organs.

Free booze trolley? Tuck in and f**k the hangover!= WIN!

Hope this helps:grin:
