Hi guys, tried the demo, one problem, one question

OK, I`ve had the demo for a few days now, and this could be a great title to add to my collection. I don`t mind that sim is a very difficult mode to fly in, it wouldn`t be a sim otherwise, but there is one gameplay/control snag that is stopping me from really getting into it and enjoying the full experience - the `look around` feature.

As it stands, to look around you have to hold down the right stick button and keep it held down while looking about you, and all too often the rudder and throttle have been engaged while I`m looking around for enemies on sim mode. It just doesn`t make sense that you have to be skillful and dextrous in order to just look around, when you need all that skill and dexterity to fly the plane. It would be a lot easier to look around if you had complete freedom of the stick, so why not make it one click of th RS button to disengage the rudder and another click to engage it? That way there`s no need to reconfigure the buttons, just assign a different command in the code.

Anyway, it`s great to see you`re taking feedback, you can tell a title is made with passion when that is so. One other thing, will multiplayer be arcade, realistic, sim, or all of them? I fear empty rooms on sim.

Definitely agree on the click down the right stick to look around thing. It is almost impossible to track an enemy and manoeuvre at the same time. I think either the rudder and throttle should be moved, leaving the stick for the camera only, or there should be a lock on that works for line of view only and loses the enemy if you break direct line of sight, and only has a limited range etc. Something like that should be good enough to last until Natal comes out and hopefully gives the 360 version TrackIR like abilities. Don't know what the PS3 players would do, but someone suggested mapping the camera to the SIXAXIS motion controls.

Multiplayer will have options for any of the difficulty settings, and additional ones to limit fuel and ammo. Hopefully the Clan scene will keep Sim alive, and I for one will be playing it.

I think the sixaxis would be great for the hat switch.

I`m fine with the controls where they are, it`s just to easy to engage the throttle, especially in a dogfight.

They could make arcade the player match version without leaderboards, that might encourage more people to take up realistic and sim

Empi666 08-17-2009 05:43 PM

How does the look around feature work with a stick?

IIJ0SePhXII 08-17-2009 05:52 PM

I haven`t used a flightstick on the demo, and would like to know myself. Anybody?

The Aviator has a separate hatstick on top of the stick itself which controls view independantly of power and rudder. I would imagine the Ace Edge/Hori, which is the only other 360 flightstick, works in the same way.

Empi666 08-17-2009 06:06 PM

I am aware of the hat switch on the flight sticks.

What I want to know is, how it works. How is the movement? Is it hard to keep in one place?

I heard that looking with the controller is hard because it always wants to return to center.

i was curious about this as well. are they padlock views?

HauptmannMolders 08-17-2009 06:13 PM

I have a Thrustmater HOTAS and the hat switch is on the thumb side of the stick, left side. I have a ps3 so haven't tried the demo but in the manual its mapped to that button, should be vastly superior to using the ps3 controller's R3. I had a hard enough time using R3 to knife guys in COD never mind accurately looking around!

There is a target camera that locks onto the target and yes the camera returns to center when you let go of the hat switch.

HauptmannMolders 08-17-2009 07:45 PM

Does the target lock work in sim as well? I assume this is different the "look around" feature?

BTW good times on World At War the other day, you laugh a lot as do I so it was nice to get to "meet" you. Really looking forward to laughing at all those sucka squads we're going to be swatting from the sky!!!!

Hi there,

I am in the same case as you are. I have a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS on the PS3.
I am a bit worried that the hat switch will not perform very good on this joystick, simply because this one isn't progressive and has only 8 positions. So what if I want to take a look at 1 or 11 o'clock? Will this be possible? or if we click right or left on the hat switch, are we forced to look at 90°?

I was just wondering...

Any opinion?

regards,

Yeah that was fun, I do have a tendency to do that

Yeah I can't till we can fly as a squad!!!

This is exactly what I was wondering about! Its going to stink not being able to look fluidly all around. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait! I am sick of waiting all ready!!

Aw, man! I didn't know the TM Hotas X hat switch only has 8 positions. Merg!

So does the button have positions you can feel as you move it around?

The AV8R moves fluidly, like it's on a ball joint.

Yes that's right... you can feel all the positions and it is not like the saitek aviator. I will see on the demo if that works fine anyway but I think it won't if this hat button is dedicated to the "look around view".

I bet it will work like the AV8R. Hopefully (crossing fingers) I am going to buy this stick as well plus I already have the AV8R.

Glad to see at least some guys have the option of using a HOTAS to map some of the views. Looks like either Panning or Snapviews are supported. I figured they might have a Padlock which would really help guys out with PS3 controllers.

Maybe one day the game and the PS3 will support the Track IR 5. It's been supported in the PC version.

I definitely agree with that ! :)

Control tweaks can be added post-release via patches so I'm optimistic if there's a problem it will be fixed.

That is of course, if they're willing to support the game post-release. I don't know if DLC has been confirmed or not.

trk29 08-19-2009 01:31 AM

Yes look at fight night round 4 they didn't put face buttons in to throw punches and ALOT people complained about it and they put that option in in the dlc. So ya never know.

IIJ0SePhXII 08-19-2009 08:03 AM

Well, I`ve ordered an AV8R now, but I still want people to enjoy the game and join in the multiplayer and I`m sure the devs do too. Hopefully they`ll patch this oversight
