Oleg interview up
|
Quite a read, but Oleg is still keeping his cards close to his chest.
My first reaction from reading the interview, was "I want to know more!!!! Damn it!!!!!". (not a good way to express your thanks for the interview I know! Un-grateful bunch us flight simmers are I know!) At least I know I've got a while to improve my flying/combat skills before SOW comes out! Hopefully with the interview out of the way we could hope for some more development shots????????? |
Seems to me Oleg is incorporating features that will make many happy. From 3rd party development to a mod friendly engine, this could spell a huge growth potential for us hobbyists within this game. Imagine some of the talent employed by the modders to improve and expand on BoB.
I hope (and I think we will) we get to see some high quality 3rd party developments from the likes of those who worked with MSFS. I REALLY like how he thinks regarding DRM. Hopefully the publisher will see it the same way. While I'd have liked to see something different, like a clip, I'm satisfied with what Oleg presented and am enthused for the upcoming release. |
Can't really say that the interview revealed anything we didn't know.
Sure some minor things but the Storm of War part was rather limited of content.. 2010 it is then, RoF until then :) |
Yeah, nothing really new apart from a couple of pictures and another indication of a release date. Feuerfalke can eat his own shorts now, so its not all bad!! It seems a long time ago that i was being flamed and mocked for suggesting a March 2010 release date, purely going on how bad Oleg's previous release date indications have been (September 2009, being one) I now predict a 2011 release. Any short eating bets welcome.

My guess at planes that may make the cut include the Beaufighter, Westland Whirlwind and Defiant?
Or maybe a few civilian planes to attract the MS crowd? They may even be non-historical... A Boeing 747 maybe just to show the MS crowd what the engine is capable. I for one was rather please with the update. Far more information was released than at first glance. I think some of the people who feel it is the same old stuff revamped missed a lot. Here is just a few interesting tit-bits "At least one flak gun type for each side. Yes, they’ll be stationary for now. Although the Storm of War engine does support moving ground objects controllable by the player." Players driving tanks? "There will be people. There is skeletal animation." Troops on the ground "We’ll have over a hundred different human models, and possibly up to 190, depending on how much we can do before we go gold." Aircrew and groundstaff "The main content is ready now. 10% of the content — such as the ships and some of the ground objects on the airfields — are all that is left to be done" Add to that his claim that 80% is done - means the engine is 10% from complete |
I'm rather looking forward to the 3rd party development side of the engine. Some real potential there.

Possibility is endless. Obviously it reopens the whole would it be possible to restructure ww2online to fit into the storm of war model. My guess is yes or at least maybe. All Oleg has to say now is that the sea - water has a depth model and we are away. Imagine a full scale air battle with a fully fledged land and sea battle add-on The perfect dream |

as for what we got...1 new pic of a fort and a couple of pics of some men that are from another game...yes he said this and that about what we might, could or will get. as for SOW we are at LEAST a year away i think. dissapointed with oleg but cheers guod. |

I'm quite excited again now.
And Olegs English has certainly improved! ;) |
Well the last time Oleg indicated to us a release date he said September 2009, This time he said its by October 2010 and Maybe before, i repeat how any one can get a 2009 release date from that is insane. It must be a language thing but for me October is late 2010. No need to re-read what i quoted.
|
How long ago was that 60% complete remark? If it's 80% complete now, that means it might be approximately the same time from now to completion as it has been from 60% to now.

@ Igo kyu: Oleg indicated that it would go much faster after the engine was ready. Now it's just some effects and the rest put together, I guess it's picking up pace even more. I doubt it will take another full 18 month from now, if everything goes as planned. BTW: UBI announced some great titles to be announced during this years E3. Who knows, maybe we get official news soon? @ Tree: I'm really sorry for you. Your glass is always half-empty it seems. Be happy being angry/disappointed - your decision |

Come on guys, don't bother - it is obvious that Oleg won't commit himself to any release date.
His reply could mean tomorrow, October 2010, May 2010, October 2018 or whatever else you can think of. He just didn't clearly reply. Another estimation among others he made. That's fine with me, but we should not give it more credit than what it worths. The interview did not reveal anything at all (and whatever new we saw, it's just 0,00000001% of what's going on in the game - nothing really interesting). There was no new clear answer cause obviously the game is still far from the release and Oleg doesn't want to open his cards yet. Completely understandable to anyone who has ran a project, so let's respect this and move along. PS. In any case, thanks to Guod and SimHQ for their effort!!! |
I agree that it wasn't much news in that interview, but I feel assured that the project is moving along, even though the PR-department of 1C must be the worst ever.
The 80% finished thing is a litle bit scary, as it often takes about the same ammount of time to get things 95% finished as it takes to get the last 5% done. As I interpret the interview, Oleg has a strong beleife in that it will be out around mid 2010. Time will tell. What shall we now rant about? There are no promised updates we can whine about for not beeing released! Skarphol |

They are not making a flight sim guys, they are making an engine that will support add on modules and their creation with a suitable level of realism. The whole BoB part is the sidekick for now, the big news is the engine that will allow it to expand really fast once people come to grips with it. If 3rd party developers come into it, heck i don't mind if they are payware, we might be getting 1-2 theaters per year based on this...Vietnam, Falklands, the list is endless if the engine is good enough and as open as they say it is.
It's one thing to have 10 planes in a historical context and have them interact with each other, but it's quite another thing to give the community tools to integrate new stuff in the sim, like map making tools and flight model tools, while at the same time preserving the high fidelity of it all. Imagine a wind tunnel tool where you can import a 3d Model of your newly created flyable that was missing from the sim. You also input the engine and wheight data and press "calculate FM". After 2-3 hours running tests on a suitably fast quad core you have the flight model for that missing aircraft. Then you submit it to them for quality testing and adding a damage model. Or maybe there's another tool where you can mark areas of the airframe according to their material and it runs some engineering and virtual stress tests to calculate it. This is still a fantasy, but things are moving that way and Oleg's team is the one that's on the spearhead of such developments. That's why it takes so long, this is not simply a flight sim. It's a flight sim software development kit/operating system with an included module as a bonus. |

Remember this, systems specs in May, late summer release 2009. http://www.theghostfiles.org/ Olegs response when asked if he had talked to the guy was this, "Yes, he was spoken to me. However I told that it is my hope, if everything will going Ok without any serious development technical problems" and finally Oleg posts this on the 31/12/2008, Hi! Happy New Year! And personally for me I wish myself to finish BoB in new Year! Almost finished: He was a little optimistic with the almost finished bit.:grin: ....and Feurefalke i am not angry or disappointed i am just being realistic. Note, i will be accepting your apologies either in forum or by pm. |
Interesting that he has recruited people from the Il-2 modding community to work on SoW. They'll probably get stuck with that SaSqN fellow as their project manager. Just to punish them.

"When its done" |
Nothing new, old rehash of questions beeing asked and awnsered a gazillion times before.
What can i do about it?, nada, so ill move along to better things. ;) P.S. Anyone getting "maby late 2009 release" from that intervew need to reread it once or twice ;) Personally though, i would prefere complete and total blackout untill 3 months before release instead of this lolying about with "hope this", "maby that" yada yada. Its getting on my nerves really. |
Well, I´m not worried about the date of release.
As long Oleg aproaches from ending the work, the release date becomes more and more clear. So, if he now says that something about mid 2010-october 2010 will be the release date , we have to believe this time, guys. Just because the margin for error is shorter this time,Tree. 18 months is a good time for us to be able to buy more powerful CPU and GPU in affordable prices (Nvidia will launch GT 300 later this year for example) Beacause we don´t want to play a beauty like that at 8 fps , that´s for sure. Il2 was playable with the harware of 2001, but I remember that I used to play at 800x600 at the time, and as long my screen goes up, my resolution is now 1680 x1050 now, and I´m probably starts to playing SOW at 1920x1200. That´s probably will demands a lot. So, let´s calm down, 12-18 months will pass in a hurry. |
The recent postings in this thread are funny.
The only thing that is going to make people happy is when SOW is on the retailer shelves. Oleg made an effort, give him credit for that. |
Well, I'm delighted to have some sort of confirmation that things are still moving along.

I don't even know where to begin. Congenital harpies on TV? Considered entertainment? Enlightenment? Someone help me |
When we start seeing ingame videos and constant updates & marketing we'll know the release is within reach, until then just stay frosty the game ain't just gonna pop out of nowhere and say: "hey it's release in a month".
|
I think in truth that even the most brown nosed supporters of Oleg would be disappointed with the interview, especially after waiting 5 months for an update. For me there was nothing new (apart from the crap fort), i would certainly not call it an update.
|
The fort image is out of 2006. The only really new screenshot is the skinned Emil. We've never seen before in that high resolution.
|
Learning the expected time of release was enough for me for now. With a whole year plus to wait, I'm sure that we will receive more info as we get closer along. The really big question that I had, was the WHEN and now I know.:)
|
Considering these comments, I really hope Oleg will remain silent until the game is close to release and officially announced.
I honestly can't understand why he keeps in touch with a community that blasts all statements to hell, bashes his work and calls him inapt in producing this sim. |
Couldn't agree more.

The whole community is not only you or me or whoever gets in your nerves, don't forget this. And actually, we all agree that Oleg should have either given some real information, or just tell that he can't offer any additional information and talk about other things. There is no one who actually got the slightest important new information from this interview. I don't mind about this, and as I've said several times, it's better if he doesn't reveal important information till he's close to the release (which is not close - that's why he doesn't offer any information). All in all, we should all calm and enjoy what we have right now: IL-2, the best combat flight simulator ever. S! |
Frankly this community is hopeless.

Well if you think about it Oleg is in a hard place. First if he says anything about the game other than what's been said in the past he will be under the microscope from this community. If he doesn't say anything like he did in the article he can't come under fire.
That's part of the problem with the genre. Expectations are pretty high with this game so I think he just need to concentrate on getting out the door. The other side to that coin is the publisher that's paying for this development might have him under a tight leash. Our genre isn't the most popular nor is it the big money maker people here in the forums would like to think. Let's just hope the guy gets it out the door soon. My guess is they will push for Christmas this year. |

I personally did not find anything new in it, but if i post it here i get flamed for whining, you guys should get out more and learn the art of debate. Then the replies are "WHAT? We waited so long for this buggy piece of software?", "[PLANETYPE] is porked - 10 years of development and you got that screw in the wrong place?", "WTF? You said playable groundunits. Why can't I go into the bar and have a drink after a mission?", "17 planes? Are you kidding me? You got to add at least 300 planes or I'll stay with IL2", ... Some of them even sound familiar now... @ JG27CaptStubing: Agreed. The bad thing is, they don't rush things by flaming or make anything better. Instead they cause bad publicity like in the article Tree quoted. If you really want this game to be a success when it is released, take the responsibility, do you part of this project and act like grownups, not like a 3 year old waiting for Santa. |
I think you mean the article i linked too not quoted.
|
Well, I actually think the interview was rather interesting as it actually did provide quite a lot of information about the current state of the project, and it has placed some timeframe of the release at least (2010). The fact that he commented on the shutting down of aces studios also gives a fresh feeling as the screenshots could have been from 2006 ;) But I do like the high res Emil...
One thing I like a lot are the indications lately that 1C has helped MG with resources for 3D eye candy and skeletal animations etc. MG are good at flight model stuff etc, but add some young wizkids that can do those fancy 3D fires seen in BoP etc... No need to let the former flight engineers spend valuable time learning the latest Dx10 effects. /Mazex |
If I was Oleg I wouldn't even bother posting here anymore... Theirs really no point, and it only seems to stir up a wave of negative speculation. Most of the people here are longtime simmers and will end up buying the game, and if someone decides that they don't want the game because Oleg didn't "jump through the hoops"...well, chances are that they wouldn't have been happy with anything anyway (and its kind of sad)...
I'm not a "brown noser" but I don't really see how negative speculation is any more realistic/constructive then positive speculation... |

You call me a "love sick puppy", a brown-nose and worse. So be it. But in contrast to you, I have something to look forward to and I will do my tiny little part to make it a success. If you just want to bash the project, Oleg and his team, so be it. But what goes around comes around, this way or another. It surely won't change anything to the positive here or in general. |

When I bought my TrackIR device years ago she whined, but after I persuaded her to try it (took days), she actually changed her mind and said she understood why I bought it... Would I call those questions "whining"? Nope, they are a sign of love... (now it gets cheesy, so let's stop here :)). |

Hi Feurfalke, Let me say first that if I hurt you I apologise sincerely, I tried to lighten up the debate but I realise that I was somewhat derisory. Sorry on that. I do not like the name-calling habits from whoever, so I'm not happy about that brown-nosed stuff, especially in a forum where misunderstanding and miscommunication is so easy. We're part of the same community even though we do our best from time to time to split in two parties, like in the mods/no mods debate. That very debate should be a lesson for us all: a lot of flames, personal attacks, passion about legitimacy of using mods, for what? Nothing at all. We are still in the same old boat, all together. So maximum respect for you, mate, and for what you're doing for Il-2. The passion we share should be enough to keep us together in harmony, both the impatient critics like me, and the positive people like you, without the need to dig trenches and build walls, just exchanging opinions, and maybe hot posts, but always wth the due respect. Regards, Insuber "Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." |

My Wife giggles joyously when I'm in the middle of an aerial scrum and she calls my attention away to kill a spider or some such other manly task only to lose my adversary and likely snap-roll into the hill.
She's threatened many times to get on my pc while I'm at work and learn how to fly using my online nick thus totally trashing any amount of credibility or respect I may have earned over the last 8 years in this community. Accordingly, I've started turning off the power switch on the PSU. She'd never find that solution in 15 years. Better than a password too because she might call and say her laptop won't boot and she needs the password to get online to do the banking, but if it won't even turn on, it'll have to wait til I get home now won't it? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...56/takebow.gif TB |

Pity release date pushed out to late 2010 .. we WWII fans are getting old, each year that passes, see's less of us! :(
17 planes, hope one is a He-111 with varing armourments - ie add 20 mm cannons for less bomb load. I would also like to see a Hampden and a fairey Battle but will be happy that modders will be allowed to add such. At least by mid 2010 i should have a NEW computer, whether it's a PC or not will be a turning point! |

that is very fragile ground to justify making so many demanding and aggressive posts to oleg from imo. if its a direct face to face personal conversation oleg was having with a fan/il2-user, that is very different from an official statement making some formal announcements, or oleg speaking formally to a know blogger who will post his exact words for 1000's to then read. Quote:

with the most recent simhq interview i see the news as being all good, the project is on track, we are getting many of the features we had hoped for like ground vehicle control added in at some point, more complex and advanced flight modeling then sims like RoF ar getting all hyped about, full dynamic campaign, control of individual flak guns, individual human figures with skeletal animation, etc.... the BoB memorial day in 2009 is in early july, and oleg just specifically stated that by the 2010 memorial day he expects to have many 1000's of people flying his new sim, then with everything we know so far i'd put an estimate of release date between november 2009 and march 2010 |
Quote:
Oleg: Yes, it is our general plan. Maybe it will arrive earlier. I can't say right now the exact date. But by October 2010 (if not before) Storm of War: Battle of Britain should have many thousands of users. Doug: At one point you commented that Storm of War: Battle of Britain was "60% completed". Considering the original scope has been expanded, would you be able to give us a percentage based on the new expanded project scope? Oleg: The main content is ready now. 10% of the content — such as the ships and some of the ground objects on the airfields — are all that is left to be done. At the same time we are currently adding new 3D graphic effects and other features to the Storm of War series engine, and make the campaign, animate people, test and retest, etc. During the year we will spend time completing the Storm of War series engine and the first project, Storm of War: Battle of Britain. So to say that it is now 80% complete would be accurate. The above does not say it will be released in 2010. Read the highlighted parts in context of what was said. I think we always lose something in translations from Russian to English. I suggest anyone with thoughts or questions go back a carefully re-read the interview. Don't skim, read it carefully. |

Any sane person would surely accept that Oleg has got some of his timings wrong on this project, that is not a critism of Oleg its just a simple fact. Yes these things happen but without reasonable communication then questions are certainly going to be asked about statemnets that have been made. I personally dont think that is unreasonable, obviously some of you guys do. I guess you will just have to live with it. |
the only timing issue i see is that initially an evolution of il2 into BoB was due in about 2007, just before that we started to get indications of a complete rewrite of the grafix and game engine was planned instead, which pushed all work out by a couple of years. once that track change was established i dont think oleg ever quoted any dates or times
i am as eager as anybody else here, i just think that in the context of oleg working on our ONLY big hope for the next big ww-2 sim we can give him some positive support and encouragement. it is obviously clear the project is making major strides in its progress, and is now coming together nicely. |
I hear what you are saying Zap, but in the ghostfiles interview it was stated that we will get system specs in May 09 and release September 09, Oleg was subsequently asked if he had spoke to this person he said he had, he also did not say in any shape or form that the information was untrue, all he said was he was 'hoping' for these dates. Its obvious that the guy from Ghostfiles didn't just pluck these dates out of thin air or Oleg would have rebuked them, which he clearly didn't.
These debates are all brought about because of lack of communication/information if we have neither then we are left with 'speculation' be it positive or negative. I admire your optimism it seems to serve you well, i do not flame you when you post your optimistic messages, thus i feel you should respect my more concerted view. I also would like to reiterate that i have never demanded anything, neither i have i slated Oleg, the guy is a genius without question. I have only asked or inquired about information posted on this site either by admins and or Oleg. Most of my question are answered with pure speculation from those that claim to be 'in the know' - this does rattle my cage considerably and i am guilty of many sarcastic replies which i have now reflected upon after receiving a pm from a valued forum member who shall remain nameless. Now lets move on peace |
Well Oleg mentioned ingame screenshots would be published starting by September this year. Until we start seeing a promotion purpose of the game i.e ingame videos and some actual footage we can be sure enough the game ain't around the corner.
2010 sounds most likely juding by all that's been said, nonthelss i don't mind having a year with RoF until BoB comes out. |
