Best and worst units per level
What are they, in your opinion, taking into consideration their cost, leadership, their stats and abilities...?
It would be good if there was a complete list of units somewhere, anyone know of any? In the meantime, I suggest these off the top of my head: Level 2 Best: Inquisitor, Royal Snake, Dryad, with the Snakes winning this tier for me. Level 4 Worst: Alchemists (okay, they're probably not the worst, but they're way overrated) Level 5 Best: Probably Emerald Green Dragons Level 5 Worst: Cyclops  |
Inquisitors are level 4 units. Royal Snakes are level 3 units.
Just to let you know. Best level 5 as Emerald Greens, eh? I haven't used them but their mana ability looks like a plus. |
A lot of what makes a "best" unit for me is when exactly it's available in the game.
Alchemists, while not that great of a lvl 4 when compared to all others, is available early in the game. With that in mind (for best): Lvl 1: tie between skel archers and sprites Lvl 2: tie between marauder and dryad Lvl 3: royal snakes (sea dogs as an honorable mention) Lvl 4: tie between shaman and demon Lvl 5: grudgingly the Emerald- not a big fan of Lvl 5. |
Oops, my mistake about the snakes, but are you sure about inquisitors being level 4? I'm fairly certain they are 3.
Great choices for level 1 and 4, Stepsongrapes! |
Inquisitor is level 3
hm for best : lvl 1 sprite-lf-skell archer lvl 2 dont use lvl 3 royal snakes lvl 4 demon lvl5 emerald ~~ actually almost same as above |
That depends not only of the available units for the context but also of the items available. For example with the Anga's ruby:
1: Lake Fairy 2: Dryad 4: Demoness  With Ogre Sandals and slot for it: 5: Giant And so on. Well with no special items my favorites would be: 1: Lake Fairy & Skeleton Archer 2: Dryad & Scoffer Imp 3: Inquisitor & Griffin & Cursed Ghost (or are they level 4?) & Royal Snake 4: Ancient Vampire & Knight & Archmage & Shaman 5: Archdemon & Emerald Dragon & Red Dragon EDIT: For a complete list of units there's gamebanshee. Some quote there some errors, myself I haven't quote any yet. At least the unit list seems complete. |
Those Skellie Archers seem pretty good but they only have 8 hp! How do you best utilize them? (Sorry about the level 3/4 Inquisitor Confusion.)
|
Use gloth armor on them, timeback if some lost ..
|
skelli archers don't matter if they have 8 hp they receive 50% less damage from ranged attacks since they are bones:)
level 1 unit is obiously the peasant (this little bugger will get attack 60 in no time which means QUICK CRITICALS level 2 hmm dunno really.. i hardly use them:P level 3 royal snake level 4 SHAMAN best unit there is :> level 5 black dragon |

As for the actual question of this thread, I don't really see the point of it. It's not like you are forced to only use one unit from each level in your army. I usually end up with a lower level army since I tend to use the elven army, more or less. Anyways, I guess these are my picks: Level 1: Sprites>Lake Fairies>everything else Level 2: Dryads as support in the late game Level 3: Inquisitors, Royal snakes, Elves Level 4: Evil beholders, cannoneers, Hunters (the best ranged troop by far, cause unlike certain other units they still own without dragon arrows, allowing you to cast a different spell) Level 5: Giants are decent, all the dragons are very powerful, but I don't really use level 5 units very often. |

1 HUGE plus for skellies (and all weenies): big payoff for items such as whip or dagger that add damage. Other benefits of lower level units include requiring less proficiency in magic to cast buffs on them. Finally, skels are just available a lot earlier in the game. Of course, going all elf army makes the choice pretty darn clear, the other way. |
Level 1 vs level 4 makes spells and Time Back easier to use on the level 1 unit. There's items with bonus for level 1 units only and some for level 1-3 units only. Some warrior skills can increase attack (up to +7) and initiative (up to +2). The zombie wife is given +1 speed and +1 initiative to undead, all of that can easily counter balance an army with elf only.
Hunter aren't the only archer to use without dragon arrows, I just wanted point an example of that. |

Do skellies have a movement of 3 instead of 2 or am I mistaken?
|
No, it's 2
|
If you have the zombie wife they have speed of 3. That's certainly the cause if you see they have a speed of 3.
